Windows 11 Local Account The Routes That Still Work and What You Give Up
You want your own username and password on your own PC — no email sign-in, no cloud identity. That choice is still possible on Windows 11, but the map changed: some famous tricks are being closed by Microsoft, while two solid routes remain. Here is the honest picture, route by route.

🎥 Watch the video for the command method demonstrated live during setup
Most guides on this topic were written once and never updated, so they keep teaching commands Microsoft has already switched off. This page separates the three things clearly — the method from the video and its real current status, the routes that still hold up, and the trade-offs nobody mentions until something goes wrong, like the day a forgotten password or a locked drive meets an account that has no cloud safety net.
Windows Setup — the sign-in screen every new PC stops at
Let's add your Microsoft account
Setup wants an email address, a phone number and a password — and on most Home PCs there is no skip button in sight.
Windows 11 Home, personal use — no offline option shownBlocked
Windows 11 Pro — work or school path exists, domain join is behind itRoute open
Already set up with an account — switch to local in SettingsSupported
👆 The same screen, three different realities. Which routes are open depends on your Windows edition and whether setup is fresh or finished.
1
Decide With the Full Trade Table in Front of You
A local account is a username and password that live only on this PC. Windows itself works completely — desktop, apps, updates, everything. What changes is everything that was quietly tied to the cloud sign-in:
Sync stops: your Settings, wallpaper, Wi-Fi passwords, browser passwords and Edge favourites no longer follow you to another PC
Find My Device is off: a stolen laptop cannot be located or locked from your Microsoft account page
The encryption safety net moves to you: with a Microsoft account, your device encryption or BitLocker recovery key is saved to your account automatically. On a local account, nobody uploads that key for you — you must save it to a USB stick or print it yourself, or a locked drive can mean lost data
Apps sign in separately: the Store, OneDrive, Office and Xbox apps each ask for a Microsoft account on their own. You can sign into the app without converting your Windows login — look for the option to sign into that app only
Password recovery changes completely: there is no email reset and no cloud recovery for a forgotten local password — only the security questions you set, another administrator account, or reinstalling Windows
What you gain: no cloud identity attached to the PC, no sync uploading your habits, and a sign-in that works with zero internet, forever

The Method Shown in the Video — With Its Honest Current Status
The video demonstrates a neat command that many viewers will know. Shown exactly as demonstrated:
Install Windows and stop at the Microsoft account sign-in screen during setup
Press Fn + Shift + F10 (on most keyboards plain Shift + F10 works) — a Command Prompt opens over setup
Type start ms-cxh:localonly and press Enter
On builds where it still works, the classic local account creator opens — type a username and password, click Next, and setup finishes offline
Now the part most guides leave out. Microsoft has announced it is removing the known local-account mechanisms from setup, and testers have confirmed current preview builds block this exact command — along with its cousin start ms-cxh://setaddlocalonly, the old BypassNRO registry trick and the fake-email trick. The oobe\bypassnro script itself was deleted from newer install media. These blocks arrived in preview builds first, so the command may still work on an older ISO — and may do nothing at all on the newest one. Try it if you like; just do not plan around it. The routes in the next two steps are the ones that hold up today.
3
Route That Holds Up During Setup — Pro Edition Domain Join
If your PC runs Windows 11 Pro, setup itself contains a documented path to a local account — it is simply labelled for offices:
At the setup choice, select Set up for work or school instead of personal use
On the sign-in screen, choose Sign-in options
Select Domain join instead
Windows now offers the classic local account screens — create your username and password and finish setup. No domain is ever contacted; the account is local from the first minute
This is a built-in setup flow, not a loophole — it exists because companies genuinely join PCs to domains later. It is edition-dependent: Windows 11 Home does not offer it, which is exactly why Home users need the next route.
4
The Route That Always Works — Set Up, Then Switch ⭐
On any edition, including Home, this two-stage path is fully supported and cannot be patched away, because the second stage is a normal Settings feature:
Finish setup signed in with a Microsoft account — any account you control
Open Settings → Accounts → Your info
Click Sign in with a local account instead
Confirm your current password, then choose the local username and password, and set the security questions carefully — they are your only recovery
Sign out and back in. Your files, apps and settings stay exactly where they were; only the sign-in identity changed
Before you rely on the PC, save your encryption recovery key yourself: search device encryption or BitLocker settings and copy the key to a USB stick or paper kept away from the laptop
One preparation alternative for fresh installs: building your USB with the free Rufus tool lets you tick Remove requirement for an online Microsoft account and Create a local account with username before setup even starts — documented options in the tool, set by you in advance.
🔴 Set your security questions like they matter — because they are all you have. A Microsoft account can be reset from any browser in the world. A local account password, once forgotten, has no email reset and no support call that can save it. Pick questions whose answers only you know, and keep a second administrator account on the PC as a spare key.
🎥 Watch the Complete Process in the Video
The video walks through the setup-screen command live - watch it, then use the routes in this guide that match your edition and build.
Yes. The desktop, your programs, Windows Update, security and drivers all work normally. What you lose is the cloud layer: settings and password sync between PCs, Find My Device, automatic saving of your encryption recovery key to your account, and one-tap sign-in inside Store, OneDrive and Office apps — those apps will ask you to sign in separately, which you can do per app without converting your Windows login back.
Is the start ms-cxh:localonly command from the video still working?
On older install media it can still open the local account creator, but Microsoft has announced it is removing the known local-account mechanisms from setup, and current preview builds block this command, its setaddlocalonly variant, the BypassNRO registry value and the fake-email trick. Whether it works depends entirely on how new your install media is. The Pro domain-join route and the set-up-then-switch route in this guide do not depend on loopholes and hold up today.
Which route should a Windows 11 Home user pick?
Home has no domain join path in setup and the command tricks are closing, so the reliable plan is: finish setup with a Microsoft account you control, then open Settings, Accounts, Your info and choose Sign in with a local account instead. If you are preparing install media yourself, Rufus can pre-create a local account and remove the online account requirement before setup starts.
