Scan to PC Broken After Printer Driver Cleanup Fix
The driver cleanup cured the printing — and quietly took the scanner with it. This is not a new fault. It is the other half of the same driver, and here is how it comes back.

🎥 The video shows the toolkit driver cleanup — this page restores the scan side that cleanup removes
A familiar story: the printer was broken, the toolkit's driver cleanup fixed it, printing is perfect — and now Scan to PC does nothing, or the scan app says no scanner is found. Nothing new has broken. Most all-in-one printers carry print and scan in one driver package, and a complete cleanup removes both halves, while a basic reinstall often restores only the printing half. This page explains honestly what was removed, reinstalls the scan side properly, and checks the Windows service scanning depends on.

Printing and scanning are separate device entries fed by one package. One can be present while the other is gone.
1
Understand What the Cleanup Took Away
An all-in-one's full package contains the print driver, the WIA scan driver, and usually the maker's scan utility. A complete driver removal — the correct cure for a corrupt print driver — removes the scan pieces too. If the reinstall used the maker's basic driver or let Windows add the printer on its own, printing returns while scanning stays missing. The fix is not another cleanup; it is installing the complete package this time.
2
Install the Full Package From the Maker
Go to the manufacturer's website and find your exact model
Download the full driver and software package — it may be labelled Full Feature, Full Solution or similar — not the basic or driver-only file
Install it with the printer connected or on the network as the installer asks; do not let Windows auto-add the printer first, or you may get the print-only driver again
Restart the PC, then open Device Manager → Imaging devices and confirm the scanner now appears
3
Check the WIA Service — Scanning's Spooler
Windows scanning runs on the Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) service. If it is stopped, scan apps report no scanner even with a perfect driver:
Press Windows + R, type services.msc, Enter
Find Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) and check its status
If it is stopped, start it — or from an admin Command Prompt: net start stisvc
Leave its startup type at the default Manual unless scans fail after every restart — Manual with on-demand start is normal for WIA
4
Test With a Neutral App Before Blaming the Maker's App
Separate the driver from the software on top of it:
Open the Windows Scan app (free from the Microsoft Store) or Windows Fax and Scan and try a scan
It scans → the driver is healthy and the fault is in the maker's own scan utility — reinstall just that utility from the full package
It also finds no scanner → the scan driver is still missing; return to the full-package install and confirm the Imaging devices entry appeared
For Scan to PC from the printer's panel (pressing Scan on the device), the maker's utility must also be running on the PC and the PC must be registered with the printer — reinstalling the full package restores that registration; network scanning additionally needs the printer and PC on the same network
5
Prevent It Next Time ⭐
Driver cleanup is sometimes necessary — so make scanning survive it:
Keep the maker's full package installer saved on the PC, so a cleanup is always followed by a complete reinstall, not a basic one
After any printer repair, add one scan to your test routine alongside the test page — printing green, scanning forgotten is how this problem hides
Note the rule for the office checklist: cleanup removes both halves; reinstall must restore both halves
🔴 Do not run the cleanup again. When scanning breaks after a repair, the instinct to clean and reinstall once more removes the scan driver a second time. The cure is the opposite direction — the full package, installed completely.

Watch the toolkit cleanup in the video — and remember the full-package rule when the scanner goes quiet afterwards.
Why did scanning stop right after the printer was repaired?
Because print and scan drivers usually come in one package. The cleanup removed the whole package to cure the print fault, and the reinstall restored only the print driver — commonly because Windows added the printer automatically or a basic driver was used. Installing the maker's full package brings the scanner back.
The scanner is missing in Device Manager but printing works. What is missing exactly?
The WIA scan driver. It appears under Imaging devices when installed. Install the manufacturer's full driver and software package for the exact model, then check Imaging devices again — the scanner entry should be there.
Scan to PC from the printer button still fails though scanning from the PC works. Why?
Scanning from the PC only needs the driver. The printer's Scan to PC button also needs the maker's utility running on the PC and the PC registered in the printer's scan destinations — both are set up by the full package install. On network models, the PC and printer must also be on the same network.
