You bought one TallyPrime licence and there are two computers and two people. Can the licence cover both? The honest answer is not yes or no — it is one user at a time. Here is exactly what the licence allows, what happens when you try more, and the legal ways two people get their work done.
Almost every growing business hits this moment. The shop starts with one computer and one TallyPrime Silver licence. Then a second desk appears, a second person joins, and the obvious question follows: we already paid for Tally — why buy it again? This guide answers that question with Tallys own documented rules, not rumours: what Silver permits, what the second PC actually shows you, and the four honest routes when two people need the books.
TallyPrime Silver is a single-user licence. Tally Solutions own help pages state it plainly: Silver is meant for using TallyPrime on one computer at a time, and in a LAN environment only one user can access the licence at a time. The licence is not locked to one machine forever — it is locked to one session at a time. That single fact is the whole answer to this videos question.
Gold is the opposite design. A Gold licence is activated on one system and then shared with multiple users working simultaneously on the same company data over the same local network. Silver and Gold carry the same accounting features — the difference is purely how many people can work at once, not what the software can do.
If TallyPrime with a Silver licence is already running on the first PC and someone opens Tally on a second PC pointing at the same licence, the licence is already in use — the second user cannot start working on that licence at the same time. In practice the second instance cannot proceed as a licensed session (Tally may offer to run in Educational Mode, which is only for learning — entries there are restricted to selected dates and it is not a way to run a business).
Tally documents the legitimate version of this dance in its own licensing FAQ:
Notice what this means: passing the licence between desks across the day is built into the product. Two people billing at the same moment is what is not.
If two people genuinely need Tally, one Silver licence still has honest options — none of them is a trick:
Be careful with videos and forum posts that promise to run one Silver licence on two PCs at the same time through licence-file copying, patching, or licence-server tricks. That is outside what the licence permits, it tends to break on the next Tally update, and if the second PC slips into Educational Mode entries, those vouchers sit on restricted dates — a mess you discover at GST filing time, not before. A licence is a legal agreement, not a puzzle to defeat, and for a business the audit exposure is real (covered in the audit page of this guide).
The video above walks through what actually happens when one Tally licence meets two PCs, step by step, on screen.
▶️ Watch Full VideoYou can install TallyPrime on as many computers as you like — installation is not the limit. The Silver licence can only be actively used by one user at a time. Tally officially allows the licence to be used from another computer on the same LAN after every instance on the first computer is closed, through Manage License → Use License From Network.
The licence is already in use by the first session, so the second PC cannot start a licensed session on it. It may offer Educational Mode, which is a learning mode with entries restricted to selected dates — never enter real business vouchers there. Close Tally completely on the first PC first, then connect the second PC to the licence over the network.
That is exactly the case Gold is made for: one Gold licence, activated on one system, serves multiple users simultaneously on the same LAN with the same company data. You upgrade from Silver by paying the price difference, and your data and settings carry over — you do not buy Tally twice.
