TallyPrime Silver vs Gold Licence the Real Difference Explained

Silver or Gold is the first question every Tally buyer asks — and the most misunderstood. The features are identical. What changes is how many people can work at the same time. Here is the real difference, in plain words.

Open any Tally price list and you will see two licences with a large price gap and, confusingly, the same feature list. So what exactly does the extra money buy? Not features. Not reports. People. This page explains the single real difference between Silver and Gold, the limits nobody mentions, and how to pick without overpaying or under-buying.

Silver vs Gold — Side by Side

Features are identical. The only thing Gold adds is people — more than one of them, at the same time, on the same data.

The One Difference That Matters

People compare Silver and Gold expecting a feature chart. There isnt one. Tally Solutions own FAQ says it directly: the main difference is the number of simultaneous users, not a separate set of accounting features. Vouchers, inventory, payroll, GST, banking — identical in both.

Silver is a single-user licence: one person, on one computer, at a time. Gold is a multi-user licence: the licence is activated on one system and shared with connected users across the same local network, all working on the same company data at the same moment.

What Gold Does Not Do

Two honest limits that sellers sometimes blur. First, Gold is a LAN product — it serves users in the same office network, not people in other cities over the internet; multi-location work is a different arrangement (cloud hosting or branch sync, covered in other pages of this guide). Second, Gold does not multiply your data safety: everyone still writes into one company database on one machine, which is why backup discipline matters more, not less, on Gold.

How to Choose, Honestly

  1. One person does the accounts, even if others only look occasionally → Silver is enough; viewers can use report exports or the handover.
  2. Two people need entry at overlapping hours — billing counter plus back office is the classic → Gold.
  3. Seasonal overlap (year-end rush only) → consider a rental licence for the busy months instead of a permanent upgrade; Tally offers Silver and Gold on monthly rental too.
  4. You already own Silver and the team just grew → upgrade by paying the difference. Tally lists Silver and Gold prices on its official site (at the time of writing, ₹22,500 and ₹67,500 plus GST for lifetime licences — always confirm the current figure before paying).
🔴 Do not let anyone sell you two Silver licences for a two-person office. Two Silvers still cannot be used by two people at the same time on shared data — that is not what Silver is. One Gold is the correct product for simultaneous work.

❓ Common Questions (FAQ)

Is Tally Gold faster or more powerful than Silver?

No. Both editions run the same TallyPrime software with the same accounting, inventory, payroll and GST features. Gold only removes the one-user-at-a-time restriction so a team on the same LAN can work simultaneously.

Can Gold users work from different cities?

Gold by itself is designed for users on the same local network where the licence is activated. For people in other locations, the honest routes are hosting Tally on a cloud server, using Tally's remote access for viewing and limited work, or setting up branch data synchronisation — each covered in this guide.

I bought Silver last year. Do I lose that money if I upgrade?

No. Tally allows upgrading from Silver to Gold by paying the difference between the two licence prices, and your company data, configuration and licence history carry over. Confirm the current prices on Tally Solutions official site before paying, as prices change.
