💽 Storage Problem Fix

Hiren BootCD PE Not Detecting NVMe SSD How to Make the Drive Appear

Hiren PE loads perfectly — but the internal NVMe SSD is simply not in the list. No drive to recover, clone or repair. This is a driver and controller-mode problem, and there are three reliable ways around it.

Hiren's BootCD PE carries a good driver pack, but a PE can only use the drivers frozen inside it. The newest NVMe controllers — above all Intel laptops running in RAID or VMD mode — hide the drive completely from an older PE base. Work through the fixes in this order.

PE is running fine — the internal drive is invisible to it, a classic controller problem
1

First Check — Can the BIOS See the Drive

Before blaming any software, open BIOS setup and look at its storage or main page. If the SSD is listed there, the hardware is alive and this is purely a driver or mode problem — keep going.

If the BIOS cannot see the drive either, stop. That is a seated, failed or dead drive — no rescue toolkit on earth will list it, and the job becomes hardware, not software.

2

Switch Intel VMD or RAID Mode to AHCI

This single setting fixes most cases on Intel laptops. The storage controller is set to RAID or VMD mode, whose driver the PE does not carry. In BIOS setup, find the storage configuration and change the mode to AHCI, save, and boot Hiren again — the NVMe drive appears.

  1. Write the setting down before you change it. The installed Windows was set up in the old mode and may refuse to boot until you switch the mode back after the rescue.
  2. Changing the mode does not format or erase anything. Your data is untouched; only the controller's language changes.
  3. On some models the AHCI option only appears after setting a BIOS supervisor password or disabling VMD explicitly — the menu names vary by brand.
3

Load the Storage Driver Inside PE

If AHCI is not an option, bring the driver to the PE. On a working PC, download the laptop's storage driver (the Intel RST or the drive maker's package), extract it until you can see the raw .inf, .sys and .cat files, and copy that folder to a USB stick.

  1. Inside Hiren PE, open the driver installation utility on the desktop, or Device Manager, and point it at that folder to load the driver for this session.
  2. PE forgets loaded drivers at shutdown — that is normal. The driver only needs to survive one rescue session.
  3. Installer .exe files usually cannot run in PE. It is the extracted driver files that matter.
4

Use the Newer Toolkit for This Machine

Honest shortcut — actively updated WinPE builds like Sergei Strelec and MediCat carry much fresher storage driver packs and see most current NVMe setups on the first boot, in their original RAID mode, with no BIOS changes at all.

This is not Hiren failing at its job; it is the update-pace difference between a fan project and an actively developed one. Keeping both on one Ventoy stick costs you nothing.

5

Last Resort — Take the Drive Out

When the data matters more than the method, remove the NVMe drive and connect it to a working PC with a USB NVMe enclosure or an internal slot. The data reads like any external drive.

  1. Check the laptop's warranty seals before opening it, and the owner's permission if it is not your machine.
  2. BitLocker-encrypted drives will ask for the recovery key on the other PC — have it ready.
  3. And before all of this: make sure your Hiren ISO is the latest PE release. Its driver pack grows between releases, and an old copy is the most common reason of all.
🔴 Mode changes are safe for data, not always for booting. Switching RAID/VMD to AHCI never erases the drive — but Windows may not start until you switch back, so always note the original setting first.

❓ Common Questions (FAQ)

Will switching from RAID to AHCI erase my data?

No. The mode changes how the controller talks, not what is stored on the drive. The only catch is the installed Windows: it was set up for the old mode and may not boot until you restore the original setting after the rescue — so note it before changing anything.

Why does Windows see the SSD but Hiren PE does not?

Your Windows has the exact vendor driver installed for that controller. A PE must carry every driver inside itself, frozen at build time. A controller newer than the PE's driver pack — or hidden behind Intel VMD — is simply unknown to it.

Does this problem also affect normal SATA SSDs?

Rarely. SATA drives in AHCI mode use a standard Microsoft driver that every PE includes. The invisible-drive problem is almost always NVMe combined with Intel RAID or VMD mode on recent laptops.
