Remove Your Old Office Completely Before Installing Office 2024
The fastest Office 2024 install is the one that does not stop halfway with an error about another version. Old Office installs — a Microsoft 365 trial, a 2016 copy, a leftover from the factory — are the main cause. Ten minutes of removal first saves the whole job.

🎥 The video installs onto a clean PC — this page gets your PC into the same state first
Office versions do not share a PC gracefully. Two installs compete for file associations, Outlook flatly refuses to exist in two versions at once, and setup for the new one can halt on pieces of the old. If any Office is already on your PC, this page is step zero of the install: remove it fully, including the leftovers the normal uninstall sometimes misses, then put Office 2024 onto a clean slate.
What you might find under Apps — all of it must go first
Microsoft 365 Apps (trial or expired)REMOVE
Microsoft Office 2016 / 2019 / 2021REMOVE
Office language packs from the old versionREMOVE
Your Word, Excel and PDF documentsNOT APPS — UNTOUCHED
Uninstalling removes programs, never documents. Your files stay exactly where they are — only the apps that open them are being replaced.
1
Know what you will not lose
Removing Office deletes the programs and their settings shortcuts — not a single document. Your docx, xlsx and pptx files remain on disk and will open in Office 2024. Two small things worth saving first if you use them: custom templates you created, and a heavily customised ribbon or Quick Access Toolbar, which you can export from Options before uninstalling.
2
The normal uninstall — right for most PCs
Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps (on Windows 10, Apps and features)
Find every entry that is part of the old suite — the main Office or Microsoft 365 entry, plus its language packs
Select each one, choose Uninstall, and let it run to completion
Restart the PC even if you are not asked — setup components stay loaded until you do
3
When the normal uninstall fails or leaves pieces ⭐
A half-removed Office is worse than a whole one: enough pieces remain to block the new setup, not enough to run. Microsoft publishes its own answer for this — the Office uninstall support tool (part of Microsoft Support and Recovery Assistant), downloadable from Microsoft's support site.
Download the tool only from support.microsoft.com — never from a third-party download portal
Run it, pick the version to remove, and let it scrub the leftovers, including registry pieces the normal uninstall skipped
Restart when it finishes, then check Installed apps once more — the list should show no Office entries at all
4
Then install Office 2024 onto the clean slate
With no old entries left, run the Office 2024 image install exactly as the main guide describes — mount or extract the official image, run Setup.exe, and sign in with the account that owns your 2024 licence. On a clean PC this is the uneventful one-minute stage the video shows.
5
One version at a time, from now on
Resist keeping the old suite just in case. Mixed Office versions are unsupported by Microsoft precisely because they corrupt each other's repair and update machinery. If you ever need the old version back, its licence is still on its account — reinstall it properly rather than running two at once.
🔴 Most failed Office 2024 setups are really failed old-Office removals. If setup errors out in its first minutes on a PC that had Office before, do not retry the install — finish the removal with Microsoft's tool first, restart, and then install.

Will uninstalling my old Office delete my documents?
No. Uninstalling removes the applications only. Every document, spreadsheet and presentation file stays on your disk untouched, and Office 2024 opens them natively once installed.
Do I need to remove the free new Outlook app too?
No. The new Outlook for Windows is a separate free mail app, not part of an Office suite install, and it does not block Office 2024 setup. Remove only actual Office or Microsoft 365 suite entries.
Can I keep Office 2019 alongside Office 2024 for one app?
Microsoft does not support mixed versions on one PC, and Outlook in particular cannot exist in two versions at all. Install one suite. If a single old app matters, its file formats open in the 2024 equivalent in nearly every real-world case.
