This error means Outlook failed while loading your profile or data file - it says nothing about your mailbox on the server. The causes repeat: a stuck Outlook process, a damaged navigation pane, a corrupt PST or OST, or a broken profile. Work through the fixes below from light to heavy; most people are back in their inbox by Fix 3.
Microsoft Outlook_ □ X
Cannot start Microsoft Outlook. Cannot open the Outlook window. The set of folders cannot be opened.
The operation failed. An object cannot be found.
The classic cannot-open dialog - it points at the profile or data file, not at your email account itself
1
Kill the Stuck Outlook Process and Retry
If a previous Outlook session crashed silently, its process still holds the data file, and the new window can never open it:
Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager
Find Microsoft Outlook in the processes list, select it and click End task
Wait ten seconds, then open Outlook normally
2
Try Safe Mode to Blame the Add-ins
Safe Mode starts Outlook without add-ins and custom toolbars. It is a test, not a repair:
Press Windows + R, type outlook.exe /safe and press Enter
If Outlook opens, an add-in is the culprit. Go to File > Options > Add-ins, set Manage to COM Add-ins, click Go
Untick add-ins in small groups, restarting Outlook normally each time, until the guilty one is found. PDF makers and old antivirus plugins are frequent offenders
3
Reset the Navigation Pane
A corrupt navigation pane file stops Outlook before the window even draws:
Close Outlook and end its process as in Fix 1
Press Windows + R, type outlook.exe /resetnavpane and press Enter
Outlook rebuilds the pane from scratch. Your folder list customisations reset, but no mail is touched
4
Repair the Data File with ScanPST
If the profile loads but the folders refuse, the PST or OST itself may be damaged:
Close Outlook completely
Run C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\root\Office16\SCANPST.EXE (in the Program Files x86 folder on 32-bit Office)
Browse to your data file - PST files usually live in Documents\Outlook Files, OST files in AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook
Click Start. If errors are found, tick Make backup of scanned file before repairing, then click Repair
Open Outlook and test. Our full ScanPST case guide below covers repeat passes and big files
5
Create a New Profile - The Heavy but Reliable Fix
When the profile itself is corrupt, no file repair will save it. A new profile keeps all server mail and, for POP, your existing PST can be attached:
Control Panel > Mail (Microsoft Outlook) > Show Profiles > Add
Add your account. For a POP account you want to preserve, afterwards go to File > Account Settings > Data Files > Add, select your old PST, set it as Default, and restart Outlook
Set Always use this profile to the new profile
Keep the old profile for a few days before deleting it
🔴 Honest limit: if Outlook still will not open after a brand-new profile with a fresh data file, the Office installation itself is damaged - run an Online Repair from Settings > Apps > Microsoft 365 > Modify before trying anything more exotic.

Will creating a new Outlook profile delete my emails
No. For IMAP, Exchange and Microsoft 365 accounts the mail lives on the server and simply syncs again. For POP accounts your mail lives in the PST file - attach the same PST to the new profile under Data Files and set it as default, and everything reappears.
Outlook opens in safe mode but not normally - what does that mean
It almost always means a faulty add-in or a corrupt navigation pane. Disable COM add-ins in groups to find the culprit, and run outlook.exe /resetnavpane once. Both are two-minute tests that solve most cases.
Why did Outlook suddenly stop opening after a Windows update
Updates can interrupt Outlook while its data file is open, or a stuck background process survives the restart. End the Outlook process in Task Manager first, then work down the ladder - safe mode, resetnavpane, ScanPST, new profile.
