The blue splash screen appears, the words Loading Profile sit there, and nothing ever happens. This freeze has a short list of causes and a repair order that works - follow it top to bottom.

Stuck on Loading Profile means Outlook started but died while opening your profile - before the window appears, so you get no error to work with. The usual suspects: a leftover Outlook process, a faulty add-in, a damaged data file, or display-driver weirdness with hardware acceleration. Resist reinstalling Office; it is almost never the answer and it is the slowest option on the list.
Microsoft Outlook - splash screen_ □ X
Loading Profile
The splash screen stays like this for 5, 10, 30 minutes - the profile load never completes.
OUTLOOK.EXE in Task ManagerRunning - Not responding
The frozen splash screen, with a hung Outlook process behind it - the first thing to clear before any real fix
1
End Every Outlook Process First
Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc for Task Manager
Under Processes, end Microsoft Outlook - and also check for it under Background processes
Disconnect any mapped drives that are offline (a vanished network drive stalls profile load on some setups), then start Outlook again
2
Open in Safe Mode and Hunt the Add-in
Windows + R, type outlook.exe /safe, Enter
If Outlook opens fully, the freeze is an add-in or view problem. Go to File > Options > Add-ins > COM Add-ins > Go
Untick everything, restart Outlook normally, then re-enable one at a time. Teams meeting add-ins, PDF tools and ageing antivirus plugins freeze profiles regularly
3
Reset the Navigation Pane and Views
Close Outlook and clear its process again
Windows + R, run outlook.exe /resetnavpane
If the freeze persists, also run outlook.exe /cleanviews - it restores default views, which removes corrupt custom view definitions (your custom views are lost, mail is not)
4
Repair the Data File Behind the Profile
A profile loads its data file during that splash screen, so a corrupt PST or OST freezes it exactly there:
For a PST: run ScanPST on it - find SCANPST.EXE in the Office16 folder and repair with the backup option ticked
For an OST (IMAP/Exchange): close Outlook, rename the .ost to .ost.old in %LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Outlook and let Outlook rebuild it
Our separate ScanPST and OST guides on this page set cover both workflows end to end
5
Create a New Profile When All Else Fails
Control Panel > Mail (Microsoft Outlook) > Show Profiles > Add
Add your account fresh and set Always use this profile to the new one
If the new profile opens instantly, the old profile was the disease. Attach an old POP PST via Data Files if needed, and delete the broken profile after a few good days
🔴 Two checks people skip: run Outlook as a normal user, not with Run as administrator (mixed permissions break profile loading), and unplug a second monitor once - more than one stuck profile has turned out to be Outlook opening perfectly on a display that is switched off.

Why does Outlook freeze on Loading Profile after I changed my password
The profile may be stuck retrying old credentials against the data file. Clear the saved entries in Credential Manager, then start Outlook - it will ask once for the new password and save it cleanly.
Safe mode works but normal mode freezes - is it definitely an add-in
Nine times out of ten, yes. The tenth time it is the navigation pane or a corrupt view, covered by the resetnavpane and cleanviews switches. Work through both before touching the profile.
Will a new profile lose my rules and settings
Server-side rules (Microsoft 365 and IMAP server rules) come back with the account. Client-only rules, custom views and signatures stored locally may need recreating - one more reason to try the lighter fixes first.
