Clean Install Graphics Driver with DDU in Safe Mode
Flickering, black screens, a driver that reinstalls its own corruption — sometimes the normal uninstall is not enough. DDU is the deep-clean tool technicians reach for. Used at the right time, in the right order, it is superb. Used casually, it is overkill.

Display Driver Uninstaller — DDU, from Wagnardsoft — removes a graphics driver the way normal uninstallers do not: files, registry entries, leftover folders, everything. That depth is exactly what a corrupted driver needs. But honesty first: for a routine update, DDU is unnecessary — the NVIDIA, AMD and Intel installers have their own clean-install options. Reserve DDU for real corruption, switching from AMD to NVIDIA (or back), or a driver problem that survived normal fixes. Here is the safe procedure.
Before DDU — the preparation that makes it safe
✅ Restore point created — you have a way back
✅ New driver already downloaded from NVIDIA, AMD or Intel — before you cut the old one
✅ Internet ready to pause — Windows Update must not grab a driver mid-clean
✅ You know how to reach Safe Mode (hold Shift while clicking Restart)
👆 Download the new driver BEFORE removing the old one. Order is everything here.
1
Know When DDU Is the Right Tool — and When It Is Not
Use DDU when: display problems survive a normal reinstall; you are changing GPU brands; a driver update loop keeps restoring a broken version; remnants of two driver generations are fighting.
Skip DDU when: you are doing a routine monthly update (use the installer's own clean install checkbox instead); the PC works fine (there is nothing to deep-clean); the problem is not graphics at all — sound and network issues gain nothing here. Depth is a cost as well as a cure: after DDU, the display returns with a basic Microsoft driver at low resolution until you install fresh. That is normal — and exactly why preparation matters.
2
Prepare — Downloads and Defences First
Download the new driver for your exact card from NVIDIA, AMD or Intel and keep the file ready
Download DDU only from its official home, wagnardsoft.com — copies elsewhere are a known malware costume
Create a restore point
Plan to disconnect the internet (or pause Windows Update) during the clean, so Windows does not helpfully reinstall a driver halfway through
3
The Clean — Safe Mode, Then DDU
Hold Shift and click Restart → Troubleshoot → Advanced options → Startup Settings → Restart → press 4 for Safe Mode
In Safe Mode, run DDU and select your GPU brand on the right side
Choose Clean and restart — the recommended option
DDU removes the driver completely and reboots; the screen will be low resolution on a basic driver — expected, not a failure
Why Safe Mode? It keeps Windows from loading (and locking) the very driver files DDU needs to remove, and stops driver services from interfering
4
Install Fresh and Verify
Still offline, run the new driver installer you downloaded earlier
For NVIDIA, the installer's Perform a clean installation checkbox is a good belt-and-braces extra; for AMD use the factory reset option if offered
Restart once more, reconnect the internet, and set your resolution and refresh rate again (DDU resets them)
Test the exact symptom that sent you here — the game, the flicker, the crash — before declaring victory
If display problems survive even a DDU clean install, stop blaming software layers: the evidence now points at the cable, the monitor, or the GPU hardware itself.

The genuine DDU from wagnardsoft.com is a long-standing, widely trusted technician tool. Its power is the point — it removes everything — so follow the preparation: restore point first, new driver downloaded, Safe Mode. The danger is in fake copies and in skipping the prep, not in the tool itself.
Do I need DDU for every graphics driver update?
No. Routine updates are handled well by the manufacturer's installer — NVIDIA offers a clean installation option and AMD a factory reset. DDU is for corruption, brand switches and problems that survive normal methods.
After DDU my screen is stuck at low resolution. Did I break it?
No — that is the expected in-between state. Windows is running on its basic display driver because the real one is fully removed. Install the new driver you downloaded, restart, and full resolution returns.
