One bad driver can blue-screen a healthy PC. A restore point is the two-minute insurance policy that makes that problem fully reversible — here is how to create one before every driver update.

System Restore is built into Windows, free, and almost nobody uses it until the day they desperately need it. Before any driver update, create a restore point: it snapshots your system files, registry, settings and installed drivers. If the update goes wrong, you roll the whole system back to that moment — files on your Desktop and in Documents are untouched. Two minutes now, or hours of repair later. The choice is easy.
Create a restore point — System Properties
🛡️ System Protection tab — protection for Local Disk (C:) (System)On
⚙️ Configure... — turn on protection and set disk spaceCheck first
✨ Create... — name it and make the restore point now2 minutes
👆 The System Protection tab — Create is the button that buys you a way back.
1
First Check That System Protection Is On
On many PCs, System Protection is switched off by default — and a restore point cannot be created until you turn it on. Do this once, today:
Press Windows + R, type sysdm.cpl, press Enter
Open the System Protection tab and look at the C drive line
If it says Off, select the drive → Configure → Turn on system protection
Set the disk space slider to around 5–10 GB (or 3–5% of the drive) and click OK
2
Create the Restore Point (The 2-Minute Part)
On the same System Protection tab, click Create...
Type a name you will recognise later, like Before Wi-Fi driver update
Click Create and wait — usually under a minute on an SSD
Do not start the driver update until you see The restore point was created successfully
Prefer the keyboard route? In an admin PowerShell window, Checkpoint-Computer -Description "Before driver update" -RestorePointType "MODIFY_SETTINGS" does the same job — plain and copy-paste ready.
3
Know the Honest Limits Before You Rely on It
Restore points are powerful, but be clear about what they are not:
They do not back up personal files — photos and documents need their own backup
Windows deletes old points when the reserved space fills up — a six-month-old point may simply be gone
Windows limits manual points created by script to one per 24 hours by default; the Create button has no such issue for normal use
If the disk itself fails, restore points die with it — they live on the same drive
4
Use It When a Driver Update Goes Wrong
Press Windows + R, type rstrui.exe, press Enter
Choose the restore point you created before the update (check the date and your name for it)
Optionally click Scan for affected programs to see exactly what will be rolled back
Confirm and let Windows restart and restore — do not interrupt it
If Windows will not start at all, interrupt the boot three times to reach the recovery menu, then choose Troubleshoot → Advanced options → System Restore — the same points are available there.
🔴 Make it a habit, not a rescue: a restore point created after the crash is worthless. The routine is simple — Create first, update second, every single time.

Does a restore point back up my photos and documents?
No. System Restore only covers system files, settings, registry and drivers. Your personal files are not changed by a restore — but they are also not protected by it. Keep a separate backup of anything precious.
Why is the Create button greyed out?
Almost always because System Protection is off for the C drive. Open sysdm.cpl, System Protection tab, select the C drive, click Configure and turn protection on, then Create will work.
How long does a restore point last?
Until the reserved disk space fills up — then Windows deletes the oldest points automatically. On a busy PC that can be a few weeks. Create a fresh point right before each driver session instead of relying on old ones.
