The cruellest driver failure: the network driver itself broke, so the PC cannot go online to download its own cure. Every step here works fully offline — because it has to.

When a display driver fails, you can still download help. When the network driver fails, the PC is cut off — and most guides become useless. Do not panic and do not reach for the Windows reinstall disc. You have more offline options than you think: Windows keeps the previous driver on the machine, driver backups work without internet, and another device plus a USB stick can fetch anything else. Work through them in this order.
No internet — your offline rescue kit, in order
⏪ Roll Back Driver — the previous driver is still on this PCTry first
📦 DriversBackup folder — your DISM export, if you made oneOffline ready
📱 Phone or second PC + USB stick — fetch the driver file, carry it overPlan C
🔌 Wired LAN port — if only Wi-Fi broke, a cable is a bridgeOften forgotten
👆 Four offline routes. A reinstall is not one of them — it is not needed.
1
First — Roll Back, It Needs No Internet
The previous driver never left your PC. Roll Back is fully offline:
Right-click your Wi-Fi or Ethernet adapter → Properties → Driver tab
Click Roll Back Driver, choose a reason, restart
Button greyed out? Uninstall device (without deleting the driver if asked — leave that box unticked), then restart: Windows reinstalls the adapter with the driver it still holds
Also do the embarrassingly simple checks first: the laptop's Wi-Fi function key or physical switch, and airplane mode. They have embarrassed professionals.
2
Second — Your Driver Backup Folder Earns Its Keep
If you ever exported drivers with DISM (or keep a DriversBackup folder on USB), this is its moment:
Plug in the USB with the backup folder
Device Manager → the broken adapter → Update driver → Browse my computer for drivers
Point it at the backup folder, tick Include subfolders, and let Windows find the matching network driver
Or install the whole set at once from an admin terminal: pnputil /add-driver D:\DriversBackup\*.inf /subdirs /install (adjust the drive letter)
No backup folder? That is the lesson to take from today — make one the moment the network is back. The next fix covers you this time.
3
Third — Fetch It With Another Device
On a phone or any working PC, open the laptop maker's support page for your exact model and download the network driver (Wi-Fi and LAN both, while you are there)
Copy the file to a USB stick — or connect the phone by USB cable and copy it across
On the broken PC, run the installer, restart, and test
No other computer? A phone with USB tethering sometimes installs a generic driver by itself — worth one try before anything drastic
Download only from the maker's page, even in a hurry. A network emergency is exactly when people grab the first search result — and that is exactly what malware sites count on.
4
If Only Wi-Fi Broke — The Cable Bridge
Wi-Fi and Ethernet are separate devices with separate drivers. If the update killed only the wireless adapter, plug in a network cable: the wired connection very likely still works, and now you are back online with the whole internet available for the Wi-Fi fix. Offices and many homes have a spare cable in a drawer — today it is the fastest driver tool you own.
🔴 The standing lesson: keep a DriversBackup folder and one known-good network driver installer on a USB stick with your PC's essentials. Network drivers are the one category you cannot download your way out of.

Roll Back is greyed out and uninstalling did not help. What next?
Then the driver on the PC itself is the problem version. Fetch the correct driver from the laptop maker's site using a phone or another PC, carry it on USB, and install it manually. That route needs no internet on the broken PC at any point.
Can I use my phone's internet on the PC without Wi-Fi?
Yes — USB tethering. Connect the phone by cable, enable USB tethering in the phone's settings, and Windows usually installs a standard tethering driver automatically. If that works, download the proper Wi-Fi driver straight onto the PC.
Both Wi-Fi and LAN are dead after the update. Am I stuck?
Not yet. Roll Back per adapter in Device Manager, and if that fails, System Restore to the point before the update — it restores the older drivers too, fully offline. Reinstalling Windows is still not on the list.
