Four other codes sit next to 0x0000011b in search results and get its fixes applied to them — wrongly. Each code below has a different disease and a different first move. Match the code first; the repair follows from it.
Printer error codes look alike and get lumped together, but they are separate symptoms with separate causes. Applying the 0x0000011b playbook — patch matching and the RPC registry value — to a default-printer error or an RPC-over-TCP discovery error wastes an hour and changes security settings for nothing. Use this page to separate them: read the exact code in the dialog, find its row, and start with its first check.
👆 Five codes, five different first checks — the code is the diagnosis shortcut (recreated reference panel)
Full text is usually Operation could not be completed (error 0x00000709) when setting or using a default printer. This one is not about the host or security at all. First checks: turn off the setting Let Windows manage my default printer (Settings → Printers and scanners), then set the default yourself. If it persists, the stored default in the registry under the user's Devices key is corrupt — a profile-level repair, worlds away from 0x0000011b territory.
This code (often with No printers were found) appeared with Windows 11 version 22H2, which switched printer connections to prefer RPC over TCP. Some older hosts and shares do not answer that way, so the printer simply is not discovered. The documented lever is the policy Configure RPC connection settings (Computer Configuration → Administrative Templates → Printers) set to RPC over named pipes on the client. Note the family resemblance but also the difference: 0x00000bc4 is a discovery and protocol problem, while 0x0000011b is a connection refused on security grounds after discovery worked.
0x0000007e (The specified module could not be found) and 0x00000002 (The system cannot find the file specified) point at the driver itself: a file the driver needs is missing, mismatched or left over from an older package. The first fix is the clean rebuild — remove the queue, remove the driver package from the store with printui /s /t2, restart the spooler, and reconnect so a complete driver arrives. Patch levels and RPC settings are irrelevant to these two codes.

▶️ Watch Full VideoFollow the most recent one after each change, and note the sequence. A driver code (0x0000007e) that becomes 0x0000011b after a clean rebuild means the driver layer is now fine and the security-level mismatch is what remains — the codes are reporting progress layer by layer.
Not necessarily. It means the newer RPC over TCP connection method is not getting an answer from that host or share. The named-pipes policy setting resolves most cases without replacing any hardware.
Because users search them together and the fixes overlap at the edges (restart the spooler, re-add the printer). But the root causes differ, and the correct first move differs with them — which is why this page separates them by code.
