✅ ESU Eligibility

Windows 10 ESU Eligibility Check Version Account and Edition Explained

Before you chase the Enroll now button, run this honest checklist. Four checks decide whether consumer ESU is even open to your PC — and one of them quietly excludes a lot of office laptops.

Many readers tell us the enrolment wizard rejected them or never appeared, and assume ESU is a scam. Usually the truth is simpler — one eligibility rule was not met. Microsoft lists the prerequisites on its official ESU page, and they are strict. This guide walks through each check exactly as Microsoft states it, how to verify it on your own PC, and what to do honestly when a check fails. No workarounds are promised where Microsoft offers none.

Settings — System — About
EditionWindows 10 Pro
Version22H2
Installed onUp to date
☑ Administrator Microsoft account signed in   ☐ Child account — not allowed

The About page is where you verify edition and version in ten seconds. Both must match before ESU can appear.

1

Check One — Version Must Be 22H2

Consumer ESU exists for one build only. Press Windows + R, type winver and press Enter, or open Settings → System → About. The version must read 22H2.

  1. If you see 21H2 or older, open Windows Update and install the feature update to 22H2 first. Enrolment cannot start on an older build.
  2. After reaching 22H2, run Windows Update again until nothing is left. Microsoft requires the latest update installed, including the ESU Licensing Preparation Package KB5126256.
  3. Restart once even if Windows does not insist. The Enroll now offer often appears only after that restart.

Honest note — there is no supported way to enrol a 21H2 PC by editing the registry or copying files. If a site offers one, it is not describing Microsoft ESU.

2

Check Two — Edition Must Be One of Four

Microsoft limits consumer ESU to Home, Professional, Pro Education and Workstations editions of Windows 10 version 22H2. Check yours under Settings → System → About → Edition.

  1. Home and Pro — the normal home and small-office editions. Eligible.
  2. Pro Education and Workstations — eligible under the consumer page wording.
  3. Enterprise, Education and LTSC — not part of this consumer walk. Those editions are handled through commercial or volume licensing. Do not follow the consumer wizard expecting it to work — ask the organisation that licensed the PC.

Changing your edition does not by itself give you a licence for that edition. If your PC shows an edition outside the four above, the honest route is your organisation or a genuine Windows 11 upgrade, not an edition-change trick.

3

Check Three — the Microsoft Account Rules

The ESU licence lives on a Microsoft account, not on the PC alone. Three account rules catch people out.

  1. The account you sign in with must be an administrator on the device. Check under Settings → Accounts → Your info — it should say Administrator.
  2. The account cannot be a child account. A parent must enrol from their own admin account on the PC.
  3. If you normally sign in with a local account, that is fine to start with — the wizard will prompt you to sign in with a Microsoft account during enrolment. You cannot finish enrolment while staying purely local.

Use an account you control and will keep. If you later remove that account from the PC or enrol a family PC under a different account, the 10-device sharing described in the core guide will not line up. One licence covers up to 10 devices signed in under the same enrolling account.

4

Check Four — Personal PC or Managed Work PC

This is the check nobody mentions in short videos. A PC that is joined to an Active Directory domain, joined to Entra ID, or enrolled in mobile device management is excluded from the consumer programme, even if it runs Windows 10 Pro 22H2 and you are an admin on it.

  1. Open Settings → Accounts → Access work or school. If your office account is connected with management, treat the PC as managed.
  2. Enrolled and managed PCs are covered — or not — by the employer through commercial ESU, which is a separate per-device licence with different prices. That decision belongs to your IT department.
  3. Do not unenroll a work PC from management just to use consumer ESU. You could lose access to office apps, mail and files, and breach your office policy.

If all four checks pass and the Enroll now link is still missing, the problem is almost always a pending update or a phased rollout — follow the ladder in our Enroll Now Not Showing guide rather than reinstalling Windows.

🔴 Eligibility is decided by Microsoft, not by a tool. If your edition, version or account type falls outside the list on this page, no honest guide can enrol you in consumer ESU. Your real options are a genuine upgrade to Windows 11, commercial ESU through your organisation, or replacing the PC before 12 October 2027.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

How do I check my Windows 10 version quickly

Press Windows key plus R, type winver and press Enter. The dialog shows your version and edition. For ESU you need version 22H2. You can also open Settings, then System, then About, where Edition and Version are listed together.

Can I enrol ESU with a local account only

No. Microsoft requires a Microsoft account for consumer ESU because the licence is associated with that account. If you use a local account day to day, the enrolment wizard will prompt you to sign in with a Microsoft account that is an administrator on the PC. A child account cannot be used.

My office laptop meets every check but enrolment fails. Why

The most likely reason is management. PCs joined to a company domain, Entra ID or an MDM system are excluded from the consumer programme even when the version and edition match. Those devices use commercial ESU arranged by the employer, so contact your IT team instead of retrying the consumer wizard.
