🛡️ What ESU Covers

Windows 10 ESU What It Covers Security Only No Features No Support

Enrolled does not mean fully supported. ESU is a narrow promise, and Microsoft writes the narrowness down in one paragraph. Read it before you decide ESU is your whole plan.

Plenty of videos sell ESU as Windows 10 support extended. Microsoft itself is more careful — its ESU page says the programme provides critical and important security updates as defined by the Microsoft Security Response Centre, and then lists what it does not provide. This page repeats that scope honestly and completely — what arrives each month, what never arrives, and what it means for a PC you use for banking, work and family photos.

Windows Update — What ESU Delivers Each Month
Critical security updatesINCLUDED
Important security updatesINCLUDED
New features and improvementsNOT INCLUDED
Technical support from MicrosoftNOT INCLUDED

The whole ESU bargain on one panel. Two lines included, everything else excluded — exactly as Microsoft documents it.

1

What You Do Get — Critical and Important Security Updates

Each month, an enrolled PC receives security updates for vulnerabilities Microsoft rates Critical or Important under its own severity system, as defined by the Microsoft Security Response Centre (MSRC). These are the patches that close holes attackers actively look for — remote code execution, privilege escalation and similar flaws in Windows 10 version 22H2 itself.

  1. Updates arrive through the normal Windows Update channel. There is no separate ESU app to open.
  2. Coverage runs from enrolment until 12 October 2027. Enrolling late does not extend the end date — you receive the updates for the remaining period.
  3. Keeping automatic updates on is part of the deal in practice. A downloaded-but-never-installed patch protects nobody.

That monthly patch supply is genuinely valuable. An unenrolled Windows 10 PC keeps every flaw found after 14 October 2025 open forever; an enrolled PC keeps closing them. Just do not inflate valuable into complete.

2

What You Do Not Get — Features, Fixes and Enhancements

Microsoft states that ESU enrollment does not provide other types of fixes, feature improvements or product enhancements. Unpack that sentence, because it decides real expectations.

  1. No new features. Nothing new is coming to your Windows 10 — no interface changes, no new apps, no Copilot additions. The system stays exactly as 22H2 is.
  2. No non-security bug fixes. If a driver misbehaves, a printer breaks after a change, or an app crashes for a non-security reason, ESU does not fix it. Those fixes stopped with end of support.
  3. No guarantee for every severity. The documented scope is Critical and Important security issues. Lower-rated items may not receive ESU patches.
  4. Third-party software is untouched. Your browser, antivirus and apps update — or stop updating — on their own vendors schedules, not through ESU.

Practical effect — an ESU PC slowly freezes in time while staying patched. Software that requires a newer Windows will still refuse to install, and hardware problems will still be yours to solve.

3

What You Do Not Get — Technical Support

The same Microsoft paragraph ends with a line many summaries drop — ESU does not come with technical support. If Windows breaks, there is no Microsoft support entitlement that comes back with enrolment.

  1. You cannot open a Microsoft support case on the strength of ESU alone.
  2. Help comes from the same places it does today — guides like this one, the video comments, community forums and your local technician.
  3. Backups therefore matter more, not less, on an ESU PC. Keep File History or another backup running, and keep a recovery USB, because no support desk is waiting if the system drive fails.

Also separate two things readers confuse — Defender antivirus definitions and operating system patches are different supplies. Definitions help recognise known malware; OS patches close the holes malware uses. ESU is about the holes. Do not treat a still-updating antivirus as proof the OS is patched.

4

How to Judge ESU Honestly for Your PC

With the real scope in front of you, the decision becomes simple arithmetic about time.

  1. ESU fits if the PC will be upgraded or replaced well before October 2027, runs software you are still migrating, or belongs to a family member who needs a calm, planned change instead of a rushed one.
  2. ESU does not fit as a way to keep a main banking and work PC on Windows 10 indefinitely. The end date is fixed, the scope is narrow, and every month the rest of the software world moves further away from Windows 10.
  3. Businesses, note — this page describes the consumer programme. Commercial ESU is a separate per-device licence with its own pricing and up to three years of coverage. Do not plan office PCs around consumer terms.

Enrol for the bridge, write 12 October 2027 in your calendar, and spend the bought time on the migration itself. That is the use Microsoft designed ESU for, in Microsofts own words — a more secure option while you transition to Windows 11.

🔴 ESU equals security patches only. Any headline or seller promising that ESU restores full Windows 10 support, unlocks features or includes Microsoft helpdesk support is going beyond what Microsoft documents. Plan on the narrow promise — it is the only one that will be kept.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Does ESU include new Windows 10 features

No. Microsoft states that ESU provides only critical and important security updates as defined by the Microsoft Security Response Centre. It does not provide other types of fixes, feature improvements or product enhancements. Your Windows 10 version 22H2 stays functionally exactly as it is today.

If something breaks on my ESU PC can I contact Microsoft support

ESU does not come with technical support, so enrolment alone gives you no Microsoft support entitlement. You will rely on community help, guides and local technicians as you do now. That is why keeping a working backup and a recovery USB matters more on an ESU PC, not less.

Are browser and Office updates part of ESU

No. Browsers, Microsoft 365 apps and third-party software follow their own vendors schedules. Microsoft has separately said Microsoft 365 apps keep receiving security updates on Windows 10 for a period after end of support, but that is not ESU and not a Windows patch. ESU covers Windows 10 version 22H2 itself — critical and important security updates only.
