Windows 10 Updates Until 2027 With ESU Free Enrolment Step by Step
Windows 10 support ended on 14 October 2025, but your PC does not have to go unpatched. This is the official enrolment walk — the same Enroll Now flow shown in the video — with every requirement and every price route stated plainly.

If you are still on Windows 10, you have one official bridge left — Extended Security Updates, called ESU. Microsoft now states on its ESU page that you can enrol at any time until the programme ends on 12 October 2027, and PCs already enrolled continue automatically to that date with no extra action. This page covers only the enrolment walk itself — what to check, where to click, and how the free route works. It does not promise new features, because ESU never delivers them.

Check the Three Requirements Before You Click Anything
ESU enrolment fails most often because one quiet requirement was missed. Check all three first and the wizard takes two minutes.
Press Windows + R, type winver and press Enter. You must be on Windows 10 version 22H2 in the Home, Professional, Pro Education or Workstations edition. Older versions cannot enrol — update to 22H2 first.
Open Settings → Update and Security → Windows Update and install every pending update, then restart. Microsoft also requires the ESU Licensing Preparation Package KB5126256, which arrives through Windows Update — a fully updated PC already has it.
Go to Settings → Accounts → Your info. You need a Microsoft account that is an administrator on the PC. A local account alone is not enough — the wizard will ask you to sign in. A child account cannot enrol.
Honest limit — a work PC that is joined to a company domain, joined to Entra ID or managed by an MDM tool cannot use this consumer programme. Those PCs use commercial ESU through the employer. If your PC is office-managed, stop here and ask your IT team.
2
Open Windows Update and Click Enroll Now
This is exactly the route shown in the video. No download, no tool and no key from any third-party site is involved — everything happens inside Settings.
Click Start, type update and open Windows Update settings.
On the Windows Update page, find the notice about Windows 10 reaching end of support and click Enroll now.
The enrolment wizard opens. Click Next to continue.
If you normally use a local account, sign in now with your Microsoft account — or create one on that screen if you do not have one. The ESU licence is tied to this account, so use an account you will keep.
If the Enroll now link is missing, do not hunt for a workaround on other websites. Work through the fix ladder in our companion guide — in almost every case a pending update, an older build or a non-admin account is the reason.

Choose How You Enrol — the Three Real Routes
Microsoft offers three routes to the same coverage. All three end on the same date, 12 October 2027. Pick the one that fits you — the security updates afterwards are identical.
Free — Back up your PC settings. Turn on syncing of your PC settings with Windows Backup to your Microsoft account and confirm. If you already back up your settings, you simply confirm and enrol at no cost. This is the route completed in the video.
Free if you have the points — Redeem 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points. The wizard checks your Rewards balance and redeems the points. No card is needed.
Paid — One-time purchase of 30 US dollars plus tax, or the local equivalent in your region. This is a single payment, not a yearly subscription.
One licence covers up to 10 devices on the same Microsoft account. On your second PC, open Windows Update, click Enroll now, sign in with the same account and choose Add device. Regional terms can differ — in the European Economic Area, for example, Microsoft shows different no-cost terms inside Settings. Always trust the price and wording your own wizard shows you.
4
Finish, Verify and Leave Updates On
After you pick a route, click Enroll and then Done, exactly as shown at the end of the video. Then verify — never assume.
Return to Settings → Update and Security → Windows Update. The page should now show that your PC is enrolled in Extended Security Updates.
Click Check for updates and install anything offered, then restart if asked.
Leave automatic updates on. ESU patches arrive through Windows Update each month — an enrolled PC with updates paused is not protected.
If you enrolled through the free Backup route, leave settings sync on. Turning it off can affect that enrolment route.
Write the deadline in your calendar now — 12 October 2027. ESU buys time to plan an upgrade or a replacement. It is not a permanent home for Windows 10.
Already enrolled last year? Microsoft states your coverage continues automatically through 12 October 2027 — no re-enrolment and no second payment. Just confirm the enrolled message still shows in Windows Update.
🔴 No activator, no ESU key seller, no registry trick. Real consumer ESU enrolment happens only inside Windows Update with your own Microsoft account. Any site or video selling you an ESU key or asking you to run a script is not Microsoft — avoid it.

See the Enroll Now flow, sign-in and the free enrolment finish exactly as it appears on a real Windows 10 PC.
It can be. Enrolling by syncing your PC settings with Windows Backup costs nothing, and redeeming 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points also costs nothing if you have the points. The third route is a one-time payment of 30 US dollars plus tax. All three routes give the same coverage until 12 October 2027 and one licence covers up to 10 devices on the same Microsoft account.
What do I need before the Enroll now option appears
Windows 10 version 22H2 in the Home, Professional, Pro Education or Workstations edition, the latest Windows updates installed including the ESU Licensing Preparation Package KB5126256, and sign-in with a Microsoft account that is an administrator and is not a child account. Office PCs joined to a domain or managed by MDM cannot use the consumer programme.
Does ESU give me new features and full support again
No. Microsoft states clearly that ESU provides only critical and important security updates as defined by the Microsoft Security Response Centre. It does not provide other fixes, feature improvements or product enhancements, and it does not come with technical support. It keeps a Windows 10 PC patched — it does not make it a supported Windows 11 PC.
