Remote Desktop clipboard sharing runs through a small helper called rdpclip.exe on the remote machine, backed by the Clipboard User Service. When rdpclip hangs or crashes, text and files stop crossing between your PC and the session — while everything else keeps working. Restarting it takes under a minute.

☝️ rdpclip.exe missing from the list is the classic mid-session clipboard failure
1

Restart rdpclip.exe on the Remote Machine

This one step fixes the large majority of RDP clipboard failures — and note the location: it must run on the machine you are connected to, inside the remote session:

  1. Inside the remote session, open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc)
  2. Choose Run new task, type rdpclip.exe and click OK
  3. Or from Command Prompt in the session: taskkill /f /im rdpclip.exe to force any hung copy closed, then run rdpclip.exe to start a fresh one
  4. Test a copy on your local PC and paste inside the session — and the reverse direction too

You do not need to disconnect or sign out. rdpclip restarts inside your live session and clipboard traffic resumes immediately.

2

Restart the Clipboard User Service in the Session

  1. In the remote session press Windows + R, type services.msc and press Enter
  2. Find Clipboard User Service (the name ends with a short random suffix — that is normal) and choose Restart
  3. If the local side is also misbehaving in other apps, repeat the same restart on your own PC
  4. Retest both directions of copy paste
3

Check Clipboard Is Enabled in the Connection Settings

  1. On your local PC open Remote Desktop Connection (mstsc) and click Show Options
  2. On the Local Resources tab, make sure Clipboard is ticked under Local devices and resources
  3. If you connect from a saved .rdp file, it must contain redirectclipboard:i:1 — a 0 turns redirection off for that shortcut
  4. Reconnect after changing anything; clipboard settings are agreed when the session starts
4

Respect the Limits — Policy and File Copy

Honest boundaries, so you do not chase what is switched off on purpose:

  1. A server Group Policy — Do not allow clipboard redirection — can block clipboard sharing completely. If it is set, only the server admin can change it; no client-side trick overrides it, and on a work server you should not try
  2. Text copies but files do not: copying files through RDP additionally needs drive redirection — Local Resources → More → Drives. Some servers block this by policy as well
  3. Even when allowed, large files over RDP clipboard are painfully slow. Use the redirected drive or a shared folder for anything big — it is the tool actually built for the job
🖥️ The most common mix-up in this whole repair: restarting rdpclip on your own PC. The process that died lives on the remote machine, inside your session there. Run Fix 1 on the machine you are connected to — that is where the clipboard bridge collapsed.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Why does Remote Desktop copy paste die in the middle of a session

Because rdpclip.exe, the small process that bridges the clipboard between your PC and the remote session, has crashed or hung. It fails silently, so the session looks healthy while the clipboard is dead. Restarting rdpclip.exe inside the remote session restores it without disconnecting you.

Text copies between PC and server but files do not. Why

File copy over Remote Desktop needs drive redirection in addition to clipboard redirection. Enable it in the connection under Local Resources, More, Drives. If it still fails, the server administrator has likely blocked it by policy, and a redirected drive or shared folder is the right way to move files.

Will restarting rdpclip disconnect my session

No. rdpclip.exe is only a clipboard helper running inside your existing session. Killing and restarting it does not log you off, close your programs or drop the connection — the clipboard simply starts working again.
