Some copy paste failures are not the fault of Excel at all. PDF converters, screenshot tools, clipboard managers and forgotten add-ins hook into the clipboard — and fight Excel for it. The symptoms are distinctive once you know them, and so is the hunt.

Learn the fingerprints of an add-in conflict: paste works right after Excel opens and dies later; the copied selection border disappears by itself; the clipboard empties when you switch apps; the trouble started after you installed a new tool. If two or more sound familiar, work through this guide — the culprit is riding on Excel, not inside it.
Excel — clipboard behaviour with a conflicting add-in
📋 Ctrl+C pressed — moving border appears around the selectionLooks fine
⏱️ One second later — the border vanishes by itself, clipboard now emptyHijacked
🧩 COM add-ins loaded — 6, including PDF, screenshot and clipboard toolsPrime suspects
☝️ If the copied border disappears by itself, something else is grabbing your clipboard
1
Confirm It With a Two-Minute Safe Mode Test
Hold Ctrl while starting Excel and confirm Safe Mode (or run excel /safe)
Do the exact copy and paste that normally fails
Works in Safe Mode: an add-in or a companion tool is guilty — continue below
Fails in Safe Mode too: stop here and look elsewhere — the file, the Office install, or the known KB5002914 update bug. Add-in surgery will not help that one
2
Disable COM Add-ins in Batches
In normal Excel: File → Options → Add-ins
Manage → COM Add-ins → Go
Untick all of them, click OK, and fully restart Excel. Test copy paste — it should now hold
Re-enable them in halves, restarting Excel each time, until the failure returns. The last group enabled contains the culprit; narrow it to the single add-in
Typical offenders on support calls: old PDF makers and converters, screenshot and snipping add-ins, clipboard extenders, and ancient click-to-call plugins that should have been retired years ago
3
Check the Tools Outside Excel as Well
Not every clipboard thief lives inside Office:
Clipboard managers (history and sync tools) constantly read and rewrite the clipboard — exactly the resource Excel is fighting for. Quit yours from the system tray and retest
Screenshot and screen-recording suites often watch the clipboard for captured images
Remote access and security overlay software can intercept clipboard traffic between apps
Close them one at a time from the tray, testing after each, until pasting behaves. The one whose exit fixes Excel is your answer
4
Deal With the Guilty Add-in Properly
Update it first: clipboard conflicts are exactly the kind of bug vendors patch. Get the current build from the maker's website before reaching for uninstall
Remove it if it is abandoned: Settings → Apps → Installed apps → uninstall. An unmaintained add-in on current Office only collects new conflicts
On a work PC, loop in IT: if the add-in is a business tool — an ERP or accounting connector — do not just delete it. Tell IT which add-in, which version, and that Safe Mode cleared the fault. That is everything they need to push the fixed build
Per-user add-ins can be disabled without admin rights; machine-level ones may need IT — that is normal, not a fault with your account
🧩 The one-second test that gives it away: copy some cells and just watch. In a healthy Excel the moving border stays until you paste or press Esc. If it vanishes on its own within a second or two, another process emptied your clipboard — and that process is what this guide hunts.

The video covers the full diagnosis flow for Excel copy paste problems — including how to separate add-in trouble from update bugs and file damage.
Why does the copied selection border disappear instantly
Because another program or add-in emptied or replaced the clipboard. The moving border means Excel is holding a live copy; when something else seizes the clipboard, Excel drops it and the border vanishes. Clipboard managers, screenshot tools and old COM add-ins are the usual takers.
Which add-ins are the most common copy paste killers
On support calls it is usually the same crowd: old PDF converter add-ins, screenshot and snipping tools, third-party clipboard managers, and very old plugins like click-to-call tools from retired software. Anything that watches or rewrites the clipboard for its own features is a candidate.
Do I need admin rights to disable COM add-ins
For add-ins installed under your own user account, no — you can untick them freely in File, Options, Add-ins. Machine-level add-ins installed for all users may require an administrator or your IT team to remove, which is normal on office PCs.
