Excel Copy Paste Not Working on Windows 11 KB5002914 Bug Fix
You press Ctrl+C, then Ctrl+V — and nothing happens. No error, no warning, the cells just stay empty. A September 2026 security update broke copy and paste inside Excel, Microsoft has confirmed it, and a proper fix is now available. Here is how IT support resolves it.

This failure has a very specific fingerprint: it started right after a Windows or Office update, it affects copy, paste, AutoFill and the fill handle together, and it shows no error message at all. Microsoft traced it to the September 2026 Patch Tuesday security update KB5002914, which silently broke paste operations in Excel 2016, 2019, 2021 and 2024. Your keyboard is fine and your file is not corrupt — work through the fixes below in order.

First Confirm the Faulty Update Is Installed
This is exactly where the video starts, and it is the right first step for any IT support engineer. If copy paste broke in the same week a big update landed, prove the link before changing anything.
Click Start, type update and open Windows Update settings
Open Update history and look in the list for KB5002914 — the September 2026 security update for Microsoft Excel — installed just before the problem began
Note your Office version too: in Excel go to File → Account → About Excel and read the version and whether it is 32-bit or 64-bit. You will need both details for the fix below
Quick sanity check: press Windows + V after copying. If your copied cells appear in clipboard history and paste fine into Notepad or Word, the Windows clipboard is healthy — the fault is inside Excel, exactly as this bug behaves

Install the Fix Build for Your Office Version
Microsoft has released corrected builds for every affected Office version. Match yours from this list — these are the official fixed versions:
Office 2016 (MSI install): install the follow-up fix update KB5002665 from the Microsoft Update Catalog
Office LTSC 2021: update to build 14334.20918 or newer
Office LTSC 2024: update to build 17932.21000 or newer
Office LTSC 2019: build 10417.20208 carries the mitigation
Microsoft 365 / Click-to-Run: in Excel go to File → Account → Update Options → Update Now and let it pull the latest build
For the catalog route: open the Microsoft Update Catalog website, search the KB number, download the package that matches your Office bit version (32-bit or 64-bit — the one you noted in Fix 1), install it and restart Excel
After updating, test with a plain copy and paste in a new blank workbook before going back to your real files.
3
Workaround While You Wait — Paste Special
If the fix build is not deployed on your machine yet, Microsoft's own suggested workaround keeps you working:
Copy the cells normally with Ctrl + C
Click the destination cell and press Ctrl + Alt + V to open Paste Special (or Home tab → Paste dropdown → Paste Special)
Choose Formulas, Formulas and Number Formats, Values or Values and Number Formats, then click OK
Remember the difference: Values pastes the calculated result as a fixed number, while Formulas keeps the live formula. Pick the one your sheet actually needs
For many users the right-click menu and ribbon Paste buttons also still work when the keyboard shortcut does not — worth a try before anything heavier.
4
Second Workaround — the Office Clipboard Pane
In Excel, open the Home tab and click the small arrow in the bottom-right corner of the Clipboard group
The Office Clipboard pane opens on the left and shows everything you have copied
Click any item in the pane to paste it at the selected cell
As a last resort, paste the copied block into Word first, copy it again there, and paste it back into Excel. Be honest with yourself about the cost: formulas and exact formatting may not survive this round trip
5
One Workbook Still Refuses to Paste — the Conditional Formatting Caveat
Microsoft's own fix note carries a catch: even on a fixed build, paste operations can still fail in workbooks that contain conditional formatting. If one particular file still misbehaves after Fix 2:
Test the same copy and paste in a new blank workbook. If it works there, your Office is fixed and the problem lives inside that one file
In the problem file, go to Home → Conditional Formatting → Manage Rules and check the target range
Remove duplicate or broken rules, or clear the rules from the destination range, then try the paste again
Until the sheet is cleaned, use Paste Special → Values from Fix 3 for that file — it sidesteps the failing path
⚠️ Do not uninstall KB5002914 to get paste back. It is tempting, and it does restore copy paste — but KB5002914 is a security update that closes remote code execution holes in Excel. Removing it trades a paste bug for a real vulnerability. Install the fix build from Fix 2 instead, and use Paste Special until it is deployed.

Did a Windows update really break copy and paste in Excel
Yes. Microsoft confirmed that the September 2026 security update KB5002914 causes paste operations in Excel to fail silently — no error, the source cells stay selected and the destination stays unchanged. AutoFill, the fill handle and Ctrl+D / Ctrl+R can break the same way. Excel 2016, 2019, 2021 and 2024 are affected.
Should I uninstall the KB5002914 update to get paste back
No. KB5002914 is a security update that patches remote code execution vulnerabilities in Excel, so removing it re-opens real security holes. Microsoft released fix builds instead — KB5002665 for Office 2016, build 14334.20918 for LTSC 2021 and build 17932.21000 for LTSC 2024. Install the fix and use Paste Special as a workaround until then.
I installed the fix but one workbook still will not paste. Why
Microsoft notes that even after the fix, paste can still fail in workbooks that contain conditional formatting. Test the same copy in a new blank workbook — if it works there, clean up the conditional formatting rules in the problem file through Home, Conditional Formatting, Manage Rules, or use Paste Special with Values for that file.
