You double-click a file, Excel opens — and shows an empty grey nothing. No grid, no cells, no error message. Before you blame the file or start reinstalling Office, check the window and setting causes that IT support sees behind this every single week.

A grey Excel window almost never means a dead file. The workbook usually did open — its window is hidden, parked off-screen, blocked by a legacy setting, or simply not being drawn by the graphics driver. Each cause has a specific fix below, in the order a support engineer would try them.
Microsoft Excel — workbook loaded, nothing visible
Grey empty window — ribbon visible, grid missing
📂 File opened — Report.xlsx loaded without any errorFile is fine
🪟 Workbook window state — Hidden inside ExcelUsual cause
☝️ The file loaded fine — its window is hidden, which is why the screen looks empty
1
Unhide the Workbook Window
The number one cause, and a ten-second fix:
In the grey Excel window, open the View tab
Click Unhide in the Window group
Select your workbook from the list and click OK — the grid appears immediately
This happens because a workbook window can be hidden (sometimes by a macro, sometimes by an old Window → Hide click) and Excel remembers that state for the file
2
Reveal a Window That Opened Off-Screen
Also on the View tab, click Arrange All → Tiled → OK. This forces every open workbook window into the visible area
Still nothing? The window may be opening on a second monitor that is no longer connected. Click the Excel icon on the taskbar, then press Alt + Space, press M for Move, tap any arrow key once, and then move your mouse — the window will follow it back on screen
Save the file once it is visible so the corrected position is remembered
3
Untick the Ignore DDE Setting
Open Excel by itself (from the Start menu), then go to File → Options → Advanced
Scroll to General and untick Ignore other applications that use Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE)
Click OK, close Excel, and double-click your file in Explorer again
With that setting on, Explorer's open request gets ignored in a way that can leave Excel sitting empty — a grey window with no workbook and no error
4
Fix Grey Rendering Caused by Graphics Acceleration
Microsoft 365: File → Options → General → set User Interface options to Optimize for compatibility
Restart Excel and open the file again. On some graphics drivers the sheet is drawn off-screen or not at all until acceleration is off
Updating the display driver afterwards is worthwhile — this class of bug often disappears with a current driver
5
Test in Safe Mode, Then Repair If Needed
Hold Ctrl while launching Excel and confirm Safe Mode, then open the file. If it displays normally, an add-in or a saved startup file is interfering — disable add-ins in batches to find it
If the window is grey in Safe Mode too, and for every file, run an Office Quick Repair: Settings → Apps → Installed apps → Microsoft Office → Modify → Quick Repair
The honest exception: if exactly one file opens grey on every PC it touches, that file saved a hidden window state inside itself. Open Excel first, use File → Open to load it from inside, then apply Fix 1's Unhide
🩶 Grey screen does not mean corrupt file. In the large majority of support calls the workbook is perfectly healthy — it is the window, a setting, or the display path that is misbehaving. Prove corruption only after the five checks above fail.

The video walks through Excel troubleshooting on Windows 11 step by step — the same checks, in the same order, on a real machine.
Is my file corrupt if Excel opens to a grey screen
Usually not. The most common cause is a hidden workbook window, which View, Unhide fixes in seconds. Off-screen windows after using a second monitor and the Ignore DDE setting are next on the list. Treat corruption as the explanation only after these checks fail.
Why is the Unhide button greyed out for me
Then no workbook window is currently hidden, so your grey screen has a different cause. Move on to the Arrange All and off-screen window steps, then the Ignore DDE setting and graphics acceleration fixes in this guide.
Why did this start after I stopped using a second monitor
Excel remembers where a workbook window was last positioned. If that position was on a monitor that is now unplugged, the window opens there — invisible to you. Use Arrange All, Tiled to force it back, or the Alt+Space, Move, arrow key trick to drag it onto the visible screen.
