Excel Safe Mode How to Start and Find Faulty Add-ins
Safe Mode is the Excel X-ray. It starts the program bare — no add-ins, no startup templates, no customisations. If your problem vanishes there, the culprit is something that loads with Excel; if it stays, you have just saved hours of chasing the wrong suspect. Here is how to run it and read it properly.

Every experienced support engineer keeps this test near the top of the list, because one run answers the biggest question in Office troubleshooting: is it Excel, or is it something riding on Excel? Add-ins from PDF tools, accounting packages and old utilities cause a surprising share of crashes and broken copy paste — Safe Mode exposes them in two minutes.

☝️ If the problem disappears in Safe Mode, whatever loads with Excel is your culprit
1
Start Excel in Safe Mode — Two Ways
The Ctrl key way: hold down Ctrl and click the Excel shortcut. Keep holding until Excel asks whether you want to start in Safe Mode — click Yes
The command way: press Windows + R, type excel /safe and press Enter. Note the space before the slash — without it the command fails
Confirm you are really in Safe Mode: the title bar reads Microsoft Excel (Safe Mode)
Safe Mode is only a diagnostic. It changes nothing permanently — closing Excel ends it completely
2
Test the Exact Failing Action and Read the Result
Open the same file and repeat the same action that fails normally — the same copy and paste, the same macro, the same print job
It works in Safe Mode: the fault is in something that normally loads with Excel — an add-in or a startup file. Go to Fix 3
It still fails in Safe Mode: add-ins are innocent. Think instead about the file itself, damaged Office program files (the repair route), or a Windows-level bug such as the KB5002914 update issue
This one test, honestly read, cuts the troubleshooting tree in half — it is why support engineers run it so early
3
Binary-Search the Add-ins
Do not disable add-ins one at a time from the top — halve the suspects instead:
In normal Excel go to File → Options → Add-ins
At the bottom set Manage to COM Add-ins and click Go
Untick every add-in, click OK, and restart Excel. Confirm the problem is gone
Re-enable half of them and restart. If the problem returns, the culprit is in that half; if not, it is in the other half. Repeat the halving until one add-in is left standing
Update that add-in from its maker, or leave it disabled and uninstall it if it is not needed
4
Check the XLSTART Startup Folders Too
Safe Mode also skips files in Excel's startup folders, so a poisoned template is the other classic cause. Check %appdata%\Microsoft\Excel\XLSTART first
Also look in the Office program folder's XLSTART directory (inside the Microsoft Office root folder under Program Files)
Move anything you find — personal templates like Book.xltx or macro workbooks — out to your desktop temporarily
Restart Excel normally. If the problem is gone, one of those files was loading broken code or settings into every session; replace or rebuild it
🧪 Safe Mode is an X-ray, not a cure. It never repairs anything by itself — it tells you where the fault lives. The fix is always what you do with that answer: remove the add-in, replace the startup file, or stop wasting time on add-ins and look at the file or the program instead.

The video demonstrates the full Excel troubleshooting sequence on Windows 11 — Safe Mode included, in the order support engineers actually use it.
No. Safe Mode only skips loading add-ins, startup files and custom settings for that one session. It installs nothing, deletes nothing and saves no changes. Close Excel and the next launch is completely normal again.
Copy paste fails even in Safe Mode. What does that mean
It clears the add-ins — the fault is elsewhere. The realistic suspects are a damaged workbook, damaged Office program files that need a Quick Repair, or a Windows or Office update bug such as the KB5002914 issue, which needs its specific fix build rather than add-in surgery.
The excel /safe command did not work. What did I do wrong
Almost always the missing space. The Run box needs excel, then a space, then /safe. If Excel is not in the system path on an unusual install, use the Ctrl key method instead: hold Ctrl while clicking the Excel shortcut and confirm the Safe Mode prompt.
