Microsoft Office Quick Repair vs Online Repair Guide
When Excel, Word or Outlook start misbehaving everywhere at once, reinstalling Office from scratch is overkill — Windows carries two built-in repairs for exactly this. They are not equal, and picking the heavy one first wastes an hour. Here is the order IT support actually follows.

Both repairs fix damaged Office program files while leaving your documents alone. The difference is depth: Quick Repair works offline in minutes and fixes the majority of damage, while Online Repair essentially re-downloads Office and resets its settings. Knowing which one your problem actually needs is the whole game.
Microsoft Office — Repair options
⚡ Quick RepairRuns fully offline • about 5 minutes • fixes damaged program files • keeps all your settings • try this first
🌐 Online RepairDownloads Office again • 30 to 60 minutes • resets app settings to defaults • needs internet and sign-in • the heavier hammer
☝️ The two repairs are not equal — Quick Repair first, Online Repair only if Quick fails
1
Run Quick Repair First
Close every Office app — Excel, Word, Outlook, all of them. Repair cannot fix files that are open
Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps
Find Microsoft Office or Microsoft 365 in the list, click the three dots (or the entry) and choose Modify. On older Windows it is Control Panel → Programs and Features → select Office → Change
Select Quick Repair and click Repair. It works offline and usually finishes in a few minutes
2
Test Properly Before Judging the Result
Restart the PC once — repairs replace files that only fully settle after a reboot
Open Excel and test the exact feature that was broken, in the same file where it failed
If the problem is gone, stop here. Online Repair would add nothing but an hour of waiting
3
Run Online Repair Only When Quick Repair Was Not Enough
Same path as Fix 1: Settings → Apps → Installed apps → Office → Modify
This time select Online Repair and click Repair. Office removes and re-downloads its components, so stay on a decent internet connection
Expect 30 to 60 minutes. Afterwards Office may ask you to sign in to reactivate — have the Microsoft account or product key ready
Know what resets: app settings return to defaults — custom ribbon layouts, Quick Access Toolbar changes and some options need setting up again. Your documents are never part of this
4
What Repair Cannot Fix — Do Not Waste the Hour
Being clear about limits saves you a pointless reinstall:
Damaged documents: repair fixes the program, not a corrupt workbook. A broken file needs its own recovery
Bad add-ins: they survive repair and will break things again. Disable them separately
Windows update bugs: the Excel copy paste failure caused by update KB5002914 needs Microsoft's fix build for your Office version — repair does not change that
Licence and account errors: activation problems belong to sign-in and subscription checks, not repair
🛡️ Your files are safe. Neither repair touches your documents on disk or in OneDrive — they only work on the Office program itself. The one rule is to close all Office apps first, so nothing is caught mid-save while files are being replaced.

No. Both Quick Repair and Online Repair work only on the Office program files. Your documents, spreadsheets and saved emails are untouched. Online Repair does reset app settings such as ribbon customisations back to defaults, which is why it is the second step, not the first.
How long does Online Repair take
Typically 30 to 60 minutes, because it downloads the full Office package again. Your internet speed decides most of it. Quick Repair, by contrast, works completely offline and normally finishes in about five minutes.
Quick Repair finished but nothing changed. What now
Restart the PC and test again first — some replaced files only settle after a reboot. If the fault is still there, move to Online Repair. If even that fails, the cause is probably outside the program files: a faulty add-in, a damaged document, or a Windows update bug, each of which has its own fix.
