GoodSync License Explained Personal Workstation and Server

“Do I need one license or five?” is the most asked GoodSync question — and the answer is a simple rule most people guess wrong. The license follows the computer, not the files.

GoodSync's licensing confuses people because it is not priced like cloud storage. You do not pay per job, per folder, per user account or per gigabyte synced. The official rule, printed on GoodSync's own business pages, is: one license per computer the software runs on — “One license per workstation”, “One license per server”. Everything else in this guide is working out what that rule means for a home, a small office, and a server room, using only figures GoodSync itself publishes.

1

The One Rule — A License Lives on a Computer

  1. If GoodSync is installed and runs jobs on a machine, that machine needs a license. Three office PCs each running their own jobs = three licenses
  2. A PC that is only a destination — a shared folder or NAS the job writes to — does not run GoodSync and does not need one. The SMB-shared PC in a LAN setup is licensed only if GoodSync itself is installed there
  3. GoodSync Connect changes the count: it needs GoodSync installed on both computers, so both are licensed
  4. Virtual machines count as computers. A workstation license covers one endpoint machine, physical or virtual, in GoodSync's own wording
2

The Editions, Without the Marketing

  1. Personal — for home users on a Windows PC or Mac, licensed per computer (there is also a portable variant, GoodSync2Go, licensed per USB drive it lives on)
  2. Workstation — the business edition for endpoint PCs and Macs. GoodSync lists it from $49.95 per year per workstation, with a perpetual option. This is the edition for office desktops and laptops
  3. Server — for machines running a Windows Server or Linux server operating system, listed from $499.95 per year per server. The jump is about the OS and the role, not features home users are missing
  4. Control Center — an optional extra for businesses: a web console to create, deploy and monitor jobs across many machines centrally, priced per runner. A small office running jobs machine-by-machine does not need it
3

Trial First — What Happens When It Ends

  1. GoodSync begins with a free trial of the full product — set up your real jobs during it, because a job design that works in the trial works the same licensed
  2. When the trial ends without a license, the product does not delete your jobs or your data — your files are ordinary files in ordinary folders, never held hostage. The software's job-running ability is what the license buys back
  3. Buying restores the same installation: activate with the purchased license and the jobs you built continue. Nobody re-creates anything
  4. Honest note: there is no permanent free edition of GoodSync with full features. If your need is simple two-folder syncing and the budget is zero, that product exists and is called FreeFileSync — this site has an honest comparison
4

What You Are Never Charged For

  1. Number of jobs — one PC can run two jobs or forty under its one license
  2. Amount of data — GoodSync does not meter gigabytes. But remember the separate bill: if a job's destination is Google Drive or S3, that storage is billed by its own provider. GoodSync's license never includes cloud space
  3. Support basics — GoodSync advertises free 24/7 support with its business plans, which is part of what the yearly figure buys over a one-time free tool
  4. Renewal honesty — yearly licenses need renewing to keep running as licensed software; perpetual licenses exist for those who prefer one payment. Check which you are buying at checkout; the two sit side by side on the official pages
🔴 Before paying anyone: buy only from goodsync.com or an authorised reseller, and re-check the live price there — prices and edition names change, and any site selling a “lifetime GoodSync” at a steep discount is selling you a problem. Count your computers that will actually run jobs; that number, and nothing else, is your license count. The video shows whether the software itself earns that count in your office.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

I have one PC and one laptop. How many licenses do I need?

It depends on the design. If GoodSync runs only on the PC and the laptop is just a shared folder it writes to, one license covers it. If you install GoodSync on both and use GoodSync Connect between them, both machines run the software and each needs its own license.

Does the Server edition work on a normal Windows 11 PC?

The editions follow the operating system and role: Server is licensed for one Windows or Linux server machine. A normal Windows 11 desktop belongs on a Personal or Workstation license — buying Server for it wastes money, and running Workstation on a server OS is outside its terms. Match the edition to the machine.

If I stop renewing, do my synced files disappear?

No. Your files live in ordinary folders and remain exactly where they are, untouched. What lapses is the software's license to keep running jobs. Nothing about your data is stored inside GoodSync in a proprietary format — the folders are yours in every scenario.
