Location Greyed Out On An Office PC It Is Probably Managed On Purpose
The repair guides for greyed out location assume the PC is yours. On an office laptop that assumption fails — the same grey switch is often IT policy working exactly as designed. Fighting it wastes time and can break rules. Here is how to read the situation and take the route that works.

Everything in the main repair (video above) is written for a personal PC. This page is the companion for the other common case: a laptop your employer or school manages. It explains how to confirm the device is managed, why the lock is there, what to ask for — and what not to touch.
Settings — Privacy and security — Location (illustration)
Location
Some settings are hidden or managed by your organization.
Let apps access your location [ Off — greyed out ]
On this PC, that red line is probably telling the truth.
Same screen as a home PC — completely different meaning. On a managed work laptop, the lock is usually deliberate and enforced from outside the PC.
1
How To Tell The PC Is Really Managed
Before assuming anything, check for the fingerprints of management:
Settings → Accounts → Access work or school — if your organisation's account is connected there, the device is enrolled.
The Location page red line mentions your organization — on a work PC, believe it.
Other settings are also greyed (Windows Update pause limits, some privacy toggles) — locks travel in packs when IT sets them.
The laptop was issued by your employer or school and you sign in with their account.
If those fit, the location policy is being pushed by Group Policy or an MDM system such as Intune — from a server, not from anything on the laptop itself.
2
Why IT Locks Location (It Is Not Always About Watching You)
The honest reasons organisations give, graded fairly:
Compliance and data rules — some industries must show that device features follow a written policy, and a locked setting is evidence.
One standard build — support is cheaper when every laptop behaves identically; exceptions cost time.
Asset and security tooling — some companies manage location through their own security agent and disable the Windows switch to avoid two systems fighting.
You may still disagree with the policy — but it is a policy, set by people, and it has an owner you can talk to. That is the route that works.
3
What To Do — The Route That Actually Works
Ask IT, with a reason. "I need location for Maps in the field" gets a hearing; "unlock my laptop" does not. Many IT teams can exempt one device or one app.
Use your phone for the task. For directions and local search, your personal phone is usually the practical answer today.
Use the browser version. Some work tools offer web maps that need no Windows location at all — they use the address you type.
If IT says no, that is the answer for that device. It is their hardware and their policy.
4
What Not To Do
Do not delete the policy values in the registry. On a managed PC they are re-applied automatically at the next policy refresh — minutes to hours — and the attempt may be logged.
Do not run debloat or "unlock" tools on a work laptop. They can break your support agreement, trip security alerts, and in some workplaces count as a policy violation.
Do not disconnect the device from management to escape the lock. That can cut off your email, files and VPN in one move.
None of this applies to your own PC — on personal hardware the same red message means a tool you ran, and the main guide's fix is yours to use freely.
5
The Grey Area — Your Own Laptop, Work Account Signed In
One modern in-between case: it is your laptop, but you signed into a work or school account for email or Office, and location (or another setting) locked afterwards. Some organisations apply device policies the moment their account connects.
Check Settings → Accounts → Access work or school — if your employer's entry is there, select it and look at what it manages.
The clean separation is to remove that connection and use work apps through the browser instead — but you may lose access to work files and apps, so read the consequences before disconnecting, and tell IT what you are doing.
When in doubt, ask IT whether their account applies device policies to personal laptops. A fair question, with a factual answer.
🔴 Rule of thumb: if someone else owns the device, they own the lock too. Ask, do not pry. Save the registry fixes for the PC that is actually yours — the video above is for that one.

Can I just remove the registry policy on my work laptop like the home fix says?
You can delete the value, but on a managed device the policy is re-delivered automatically by Group Policy or Intune, usually within hours, and endpoint tools may record the change. It does not unlock the setting in any lasting way and can put you on the wrong side of your workplace IT policy.
How do I know if my personal laptop got locked by my work account?
Open Settings → Accounts → Access work or school. If your organisation appears there, its policies may apply to the device. Disconnecting that account removes the management link but can also remove access to work files, apps and email — check with IT first if you are unsure.
IT refused to unlock location. Any legitimate option left?
Use your phone for location-based tasks, or the web version of the tool you need, where you can type an address manually. On a company device, the policy decision sits with the company — there is no settings trick around it that stays within the rules.
