Here is the part most guides skip — you can install Office on Wine perfectly and still fail at activation. This page separates what genuinely works from the folklore, before you waste a licence or buy a key that cannot help you.
Wine is not Windows, and Microsoft's activation servers treat a Wine machine like a strange new computer. Online activation of Office under Wine fails often — even with a completely genuine key — because parts of the Windows licensing stack are only partially implemented in Wine. That is not your mistake and not your key's fault. Plan around it instead of discovering it after the install.
This copy of Microsoft Office is not activated.
○ Activate over the Internet
○ Activate by telephone
On first launch the Activation Wizard appears and tells you this copy of Microsoft Office is not activated. The online attempt then commonly errors out, loops back to the start, or reports it cannot reach the service — even on a healthy internet connection.
Until activation succeeds, Office may run for a short grace period and then drop into reduced functionality mode — you can open and print documents, but editing and saving are limited. That mode is Microsoft telling you the licence was never confirmed, and under Wine the confirmation is the hard part.
For Office 2010, WineHQ AppDB reporters specifically note that registration by phone worked where online registration failed. The wizard's telephone option gives you an installation ID to read out, and you type back a confirmation ID in return.
Two honest caveats. Availability differs by country, and Microsoft has retired phone activation for some products over the years, so the option may not be offered for your edition. It is worth trying — just do not build your whole plan on it.
If your employer gave you a key, it is often a MAK key, which activates a fixed number of times through the same wizard — the same Wine limits apply. KMS activation is different — it talks to a licence server inside the company network, which home users simply do not have.
And one warning that protects your wallet — websites selling suspiciously cheap keys that promise to activate anything are not selling legitimate licences. A grey-market key does not fix a Wine problem; it adds a licensing problem on top of it.
Activator tools and cracked Office copies are the top malware source in this entire topic. They are also technically hopeless under Wine — they tamper with exactly the licensing components Wine implements worst, and they corrupt prefixes regularly.
There is no version of this guide that helps with them, on principle and for your own safety. If a forum post's solution is a downloadable activator, close the tab. Your documents and accounts are worth more than a borrowed licence.
If you have fought the wizard and lost, stop fighting — move the same genuine licence to a route where activation behaves like real Windows.
All three routes have full guides in this series. Pick the one that matches your machine and your patience.
The video covers the installation itself — pair it with this page so the activation wizard never surprises you.

Only briefly. After a short grace period Office drops into reduced functionality mode — documents open and print, but editing and saving are limited until activation succeeds.
Retail licences generally allow transfer under Microsoft's terms, while OEM licences stay tied to the original machine. Either way, the unreliable step under Wine is the activation itself, not the licence paperwork.
