Office installed — but Word crashes on open, Excel freezes mid-work, or every document looks like it was typed in the wrong font. These are the standard Wine Office faults, and most of them fix in minutes once you know which one you have.
Post-install Wine problems are usually one of three things — graphics acceleration the app cannot handle, Microsoft fonts that are not really installed, or one damaged component in the prefix. Fix them in this order and test after each step. Change one thing at a time, so when it works you know why.
The single most effective crash fix for Office under Wine. Office tries to draw its interface with the GPU in ways Wine translates imperfectly, and the result is random crashes, flicker and frozen windows.
Do the same in PowerPoint if slides glitch during a slideshow. On systems offering both Wayland and X11 at the login screen, Wine also tends to behave better under X11.
If documents look wrong — wider text, pages ending early, tables spilling — the fonts are the first suspect. Winetricks covers part of it; the metric-match packages finish the job.
WINEPREFIX=$HOME/.wine-office winetricks corefonts for Arial, Times New Roman and Verdanasudo apt install fonts-crosextra-carlito fonts-crosextra-caladeafc-match Calibri — it should answer CarlitoMetric matches matter more than lookalikes. A font with identical widths keeps every line and page break exactly where Word put them; a merely similar font quietly reflows the whole document.
Fonts installed while Word was open simply do not exist for that running copy of Wine. If you installed fonts and nothing changed, this is why.
fc-cache -fWINEPREFIX=$HOME/.wine-office wineserver -kSometimes a later experiment — a random DLL from a forum, another app in the same prefix — replaces a library Office needed. The cure is to put the known-good set back, not to add more downloads.
WINEPREFIX=$HOME/.wine-office winetricks corefonts msxml6 riched20This is also why the main guide insists on a dedicated Office prefix. A prefix that holds only Office has almost nothing in it that can break Office.
If crashes survive every fix above, the prefix itself is damaged in a way no single setting will find. Rebuilding sounds drastic but is really a 20 minute reset — and your documents are not in the prefix, so nothing precious is at risk.

▶️ Watch Full VideoFont substitution. Word asks for Calibri, and if no metric match is installed, a wider font takes its place and every line reflows. Carlito is measurement-identical to Calibri, which is why installing it restores the original layout.
It is the same graphics problem as the crashes. Disable hardware graphics acceleration in PowerPoint options, and if your login screen offers an X11 session, Wine usually behaves better there than under Wayland.
Open that file in LibreOffice or OnlyOffice to check the file itself. A damaged workbook can crash Wine quickly because Wine's error handling is weaker than real Windows — the file may be the patient, not the setup.
