For everyone who knew this firewall as Untangle: the acquisition, the rename, the new dashboard, and what honestly stayed the same.
If you learned this platform as Untangle, the current naming can look like a different product wearing a familiar rack. It is the same product line after a change of owner: Arista Networks acquired Untangle in 2022 and folded it into its Edge Threat Management family. The software an Untangle admin knows is still there — and a few things around it (accounts, downloads, documentation, the store) moved house. This page is the honest map of what changed and what did not.
Arista Networks — a large networking company known for data-centre switches — bought Untangle Inc. in 2022. The NG Firewall became Arista Edge Threat Management NG Firewall, developed alongside the smaller Micro Edge appliance line under the same ETM dashboard. This was a rename and re-homing, not a replacement product: existing installations upgraded forward in the same version line (current releases are 17.x), carrying their configurations with them.
The rack of apps, the admin workflow, the free core (Firewall, Intrusion Prevention, Phish Blocker, Ad Blocker, Captive Portal, OpenVPN, Reports), lite monitor apps, the 14-day trial model, router and bridge modes, and your existing configuration on upgrade — all carried over. An Untangle admin from five years ago can sit at a current box and be productive within minutes. Even the naming confusion is documented honestly by Arista's own pages, which still greet readers as Untangle users in places.
Create the ETM account first and register the box — trials, backups and central visibility all hang off it now. When searching for help, search both names: the deep forum history is indexed under 'Untangle', the current documentation under 'Arista ETM'. And if an old guide gives a public download link, expect it to be dead by design rather than by accident — the Dashboard is the only front door now.
One more practical note: bookmarks and browser habits age badly here. The admin address of your box has not changed — you still manage it locally in a browser exactly as before — but every account-level task that used to start at the old Untangle site now starts at the ETM Dashboard. Update the bookmarks once, tell the rest of your team the new name in writing, and the rename stops generating support questions within a week.
The video installs today's Arista-named release end to end — the same flow this page maps against the old Untangle name.
▶️ Watch Full VideoThe name is retired, the product is not. Untangle NG Firewall continues as Arista Edge Threat Management NG Firewall, with current releases in the 17.x series, sold and supported by Arista. An old Untangle installation is an earlier chapter of the same product, not an orphan.
The upgrade path carries configuration forward within the product line, and the concepts — racks, apps, policies — are unchanged. In practice, verify after any major version jump: open the key racks, confirm the rules you care about, and take a fresh configuration backup under the new version before trusting it.
Through a free Arista ETM account: sign in to the ETM Dashboard and use its Get Started section to download the ISO for hardware or the OVA for a virtual machine. That portal is also where subscriptions, registered appliances and automatic backups are managed.
