Ventoy Plugson and ventoy.json Settings Explained for Windows 11 Bypass

Two names appear in every Ventoy bypass discussion: ventoy.json and VentoyPlugson. This page explains both in plain language — what the file is, where it must live, and exactly what its two Windows 11 values switch on and off.

Ventoy's advanced behaviour is controlled by a small text file named ventoy.json. It lives in a folder called ventoy on the main partition of your Ventoy stick — the same partition where your ISOs sit. You rarely need to edit it by hand: Ventoy ships a companion tool, VentoyPlugson, which shows every option in a browser page and writes the file correctly for you. The Windows 11 features live in the file's Global Control section.

👆 The whole Windows 11 story in two lines — this is all ventoy.json needs for both bypasses (file content recreated exactly as VentoyPlugson writes it)
1

The Two Values That Matter

  1. VTOY_WIN11_BYPASS_CHECK — the hardware check bypass. At 1, Ventoy writes the LabConfig keys (TPM, Secure Boot, CPU, RAM, storage) into Windows Setup. At 0, Setup checks the PC normally
  2. VTOY_WIN11_BYPASS_NRO — the online account bypass. At 1, setup keeps its offline / local-account path. At 0, the Microsoft account requirement applies as Microsoft intends
  3. Crucial detail: since Ventoy 1.0.86 both values default to 1. A ventoy.json that does not mention a value does not switch it off — the default still applies. To disable a bypass you must write an explicit 0
2

Setting Them the Easy Way — VentoyPlugson

  1. Plug your Ventoy stick into a Windows PC and run VentoyPlugson.exe from the extracted Ventoy folder (it is included with Ventoy — nothing extra to download)
  2. Click Start; a configuration page opens in your web browser
  3. Open the Global Control Plugin section and find the two Windows 11 options
  4. Set each to 1 or 0 as you want, and save — Plugson writes ventoy.json into the ventoy folder on the stick for you
  5. The change takes effect from the next boot of the stick — no reinstall of Ventoy needed
3

Setting Them by Hand — and the Traps

Hand-editing is fine if you are careful. Create the file with Notepad inside the ventoy folder on the stick:

  1. Watch the hidden extension trap: ventoy.json.txt is ignored. Turn on File name extensions in Explorer and make sure the name ends at .json
  2. Keep the JSON valid — brackets and commas must match the sample panel above. A broken file is ignored entirely, and Ventoy silently falls back to defaults
  3. Only list the values you want to change; everything unlisted keeps its default
  4. If in doubt, delete the file and redo the setting in Plugson — two minutes there beats debugging punctuation
4

Do These Settings Affect Anything Else?

No — and this is worth knowing. These two values are read only when a Windows setup is booted. Your Linux ISOs, rescue tools and Windows 10 installs behave exactly as before, and the file itself is just configuration: editing it never touches the ISO files on the stick.

⚠️ Honest note: because the defaults are ON, a ventoy.json written by an old tutorial (back when the bypass had to be enabled manually) is no longer needed on a current Ventoy — and an old file with a typo can only cause confusion. If your stick behaves strangely, start from a clean file written by Plugson.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need ventoy.json at all on a new Ventoy?

No. On Ventoy 1.0.86 and newer, both Windows 11 bypasses are on by default with no file present. You only need ventoy.json (or Plugson) when you want to change a default — most often to switch a bypass off.

Where exactly must the ventoy folder be?

On the stick's main data partition — the same one holding your ISO files — in a folder named ventoy, with ventoy.json inside it. Not on the small VTOYEFI partition, and not in the root of the drive.

Plugson will not open or shows a blank page. Any alternative?

Plugson runs a tiny local web page; allow it through the firewall prompt if one appears, and try another browser. If it still fails, hand-write ventoy.json using the sample in this guide — the file format is deliberately simple.
