Snapchat Memories Not Backed Up How To Check Backup Status
The export can only download what Snapchat's servers actually hold. If some of your Memories were never backed up, they are sitting on one phone — and they will not appear in any ZIP. Here is how to check, and how to fix it before you export.

People run the full My Data export, open the result, and panic: Memories are missing. In most cases Snapchat did not lose them — they were never uploaded in the first place. A Memory that was saved while backup was paused, or on a phone that never finished uploading, exists only in that phone's app data. This page teaches you the one icon that tells the truth, how to check the backup state of your whole library, and how to push a stuck backup to completion.
Read The Icon Beside Each Memory

The icon is Snapchat telling you the upload never finished. Everything without it is safely on Snapchat's side and will appear in your export.
1
The Cloud Icon Is The Whole Story
Open Memories and scroll slowly. A small cloud-style icon on a Memory means Snapchat still has not received its copy — that photo or video currently exists only on this device. Lose the phone, clear the app's data, or log out carelessly, and that Memory is gone in a way no support team can undo.
This is also why an export can be smaller than your Memories screen suggests. The export is built from the server's copy. Phone-only items are invisible to it — not deleted, just never handed over.
2
Check Backup Status Properly
Do not rely on scrolling alone if your library is large. Check the backup state from settings, and confirm the features that control it are actually on.
Open Snapchat Settings from your profile and find the Memories section
Make sure Smart Backup is on — this is the switch that uploads Memories automatically
Look for any backup progress or incomplete indicator and let it finish
Check the backup network setting — if backup is set to Wi-Fi only and you are rarely on Wi-Fi, uploads stall for weeks
Menu names vary slightly between app versions, but the Memories settings page always carries the backup controls
3
Force A Stuck Backup To Finish
A backup that has sat unfinished for days usually needs conditions, not repairs. Give the app one clean run at it.
Connect to a stable Wi-Fi network and plug the phone into charge
Open Snapchat and stay inside the app with the screen on for a while — uploads pause when the app is pushed out of memory
Free up phone storage if the device is almost full; a cramped phone stalls uploads
Avoid clearing Snapchat's cache or app data until the icons are gone — that is the one move that can destroy the only copies
Never log out as a troubleshooting step while cloud icons remain — logging out with un-backed-up Memories can lose them permanently

What Is Saved Where — The Honest Map
Three locations get confused constantly, and they behave very differently when something goes wrong.
On Snapchat's servers — backed-up Memories. Safe from phone loss, included in exports, available on any device where you log in
Only in the app on this phone — anything still showing the cloud icon. One accident away from gone
In your camera roll — copies you exported or saved manually. Real files you own, but they are separate from Memories and deleting one does not delete the other
My Eyes Only — backed up under your passcode's protection, but handled separately from the standard export, as its own page in this series explains
\1F534 Before you switch phones, log out, or run the export: scroll your Memories and count the cloud icons. The job is finished only when that count is zero and Smart Backup shows everything complete. Five minutes here is the difference between a full archive and a ZIP with silent holes in it.

The complete flow on screen — requesting the export, finding memories.json, and downloading every Memory in one run.
Backed-up Memories survive a cache clear because they live on Snapchat's servers. The danger is only with Memories that were never backed up — the ones showing the cloud icon — because their only copy is inside the app's local data. Always finish the backup first, then clear anything you like.
Why has my backup been stuck for days
The usual causes are ordinary: backup set to Wi-Fi only while the phone mostly uses mobile data, the app being closed or cleared from memory before uploads finish, a nearly full phone, or Smart Backup switched off at some point. Connect to Wi-Fi, charge the phone, open the app and give it an uninterrupted run.
Are My Eyes Only memories backed up too
They sync under the protection of your passcode, so they are not stored like ordinary Memories — and they are not part of the standard export flow. You still need the passcode to open them on any device, and if that passcode is forgotten, resetting it deletes the vault's contents. Save important My Eyes Only items to your camera roll separately, with the passcode you remember today.
