WinPE Not Seeing NVMe Drive Fix with Driver Injection

You boot the rescue USB on a new laptop, open the disk tools - and the internal SSD simply does not exist. The drive is fine. Your WinPE is blind, and here is how to give it eyes.

This is now the most common WinPE failure on modern laptops. Intel 11th generation and newer machines often run their NVMe SSD behind VMD or RST RAID mode, which needs a storage driver that a plain WinPE does not carry. Result - Disk Management is empty, Windows setup says no drives were found, and both Sergei Strelec and NHV Boot can hit it, though each fights it differently. Work through the checks in order.

Windows Setup - Where Do You Want to Install Windows
We couldn't find any drives. To get a storage driver, click Load driver.
Disk list: empty  •  BIOS storage mode: RAID / VMD On  •  SSD health: fine in BIOS
The classic empty drive list - the SSD is healthy, the PE simply has no driver for the controller.
1

Confirm the Pattern First

Three clues confirm this exact problem: the laptop is a recent Intel machine, the SSD shows correctly in the BIOS setup screens, and the same SSD is invisible in every PE and in Windows setup. If the drive is missing in BIOS too, you have a hardware case, not a driver case - no WinPE in this guide will fix a dead SSD.

2

The BIOS Shortcut and Its Warning

Many BIOS setups let you switch the storage mode from RAID or VMD to AHCI. The SSD then appears in every PE instantly. But be careful - if Windows was installed while the mode was RAID, it may refuse to boot after the switch. The safe field routine is: switch to AHCI, do your rescue or data copy, then switch back before returning the machine. Never leave a client's BIOS flipped without telling them.

3

NHV Boot - the Automatic Route

NHV Boot was built with this problem in mind and advertises that it automatically adds Intel 11th, 12th and 13th generation NVMe drivers when installing Windows with Setup.exe, alongside a wide storage driver pack in the PE itself. On supported laptops the drive simply appears - no folders, no manual loading. Use its newest build, because the driver pack is one of the things that improves between versions.

4

Strelec - Add the Driver Yourself with MY_DRIVERS

Strelec gives you the manual but universal route. On a working PC, download the Intel RST storage driver from the laptop maker's support page and extract it - you need the raw driver files, not an installer EXE. Copy them into the folder SSTR\USER\MY_DRIVERS_x64 on your Strelec USB. Those drivers load automatically while the PE starts, so the NVMe drive is visible from the first minute.

Already booted and forgot? In a running PE you can often load an INF driver live from a command prompt with drvload D:\Drivers\iaStorVD.inf - adjust the path to your extracted files - then reopen the disk tool.

5

If the Drive Is Still Invisible, Stop and Think

When BIOS sees the SSD but no driver route makes it appear in PE, try a second partition tool like DiskGenius from the same USB before concluding anything. If it stays invisible everywhere, suspect a failing SSD or a loose M.2 connection on machines that were recently opened. Honest limit: driver injection fixes driver blindness, not dead hardware - and the full video shows how each build behaves on exactly this class of laptop.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Will switching VMD or RAID to AHCI delete my data?

No, the data on the disk is untouched. The risk is only that the installed Windows may not boot while the mode is changed, because it was set up for the other mode. Switch back after the rescue and Windows boots as before.

Where do I get the Intel RST driver for the MY_DRIVERS folder?

From the laptop manufacturer's support page for your exact model, under storage or chipset drivers. Download the package, extract it like a ZIP, and copy the folder containing the .inf files - Strelec loads drivers in raw INF form during boot.

Does this NVMe problem also happen on AMD laptops?

Much less often. Most AMD machines expose the NVMe drive through the standard controller that WinPE already understands, which is why this empty-disk surprise is mainly an Intel VMD and RST story.
