What Pi-hole Cannot Block Why YouTube Ads Still Play

You installed Pi-hole, the dashboard shows thousands of blocked queries — and YouTube still plays ads. Nothing is broken. This page explains exactly where DNS blocking works, where it physically cannot, and how to judge Pi-hole by what it honestly does.

Pi-hole is a DNS filter. When an app or website asks 'where is this domain?', Pi-hole answers honestly for real domains and with a blank for domains on its blocklists. That is powerful — and it has a hard boundary: Pi-hole can only block a whole domain. It cannot remove one part of what a domain serves. Most disappointment with Pi-hole comes from expecting it to cross that boundary. Here is the clear map of both sides.

How a DNS answer decides what loads
App asks: ads.example-network.com Pi-hole: 0.0.0.0 (on blocklist - nothing loads) App asks: www.youtube.com Pi-hole: real address (videos AND ads live here)
👆 The whole story in two questions: a separate ad domain can be blanked; the video and the ad sharing one domain cannot be separated by DNS (illustrative panel)
1

What Pi-hole Blocks Very Well

The classic third-party ad and tracking networks: separate domains whose only job is ads, analytics and cross-site tracking. These are loaded by thousands of websites and apps, and blanking them at DNS level removes ads, speeds up pages, and stops a large amount of quiet tracking — on every device at once, including smart TVs and apps where no ad-blocker can be installed. This is Pi-hole's real, considerable value.

2

Why YouTube Ads Cannot Be Blocked by DNS

YouTube serves the video and the ad from the same Google domains. A DNS filter has exactly two choices for such a domain: allow it (video and ads both work) or block it (video and ads both break). There is no DNS answer that means 'videos yes, ads no'. So YouTube in-stream ads will always play through Pi-hole. Anyone selling a blocklist that 'fixes YouTube' is selling lists that either do nothing or break playback — be sceptical of both.

3

The Same Story Inside Apps

Many apps serve their ads from the same infrastructure as their content, or fetch ads from the platform's own domains. Those ads survive Pi-hole for the same reason YouTube's do. Ads that come from separate third-party networks inside apps are blocked normally — which is why your results will be mixed: some apps become clean, others barely change. Both outcomes are consistent with a healthy Pi-hole.

4

Sponsored Results and First-Party Ads

The sponsored results at the top of a search page, shopping ads inside a store app, and promotions a site shows from its own servers are all first-party content — delivered by the very domain you asked for. DNS cannot distinguish them from the page itself. Only a blocker that runs inside the browser and reads the page (a browser extension) can hide such elements, and those work per-browser, not network-wide.

5

How to Judge Pi-hole Fairly

Look at the dashboard's blocked percentage over a normal day — a healthy home network commonly shows a meaningful share of all queries blocked, and the query log shows tracker domains you never knew your devices contacted. Judge Pi-hole on that: the invisible tracking and the third-party ad networks that vanished from every device, including the ones that could never run a blocker themselves. Set expectations there, and it over-delivers.

🟠 The straight answer to give anyone who asks: Pi-hole is not broken when YouTube shows ads — it was never able to stop them. For YouTube specifically, the honest options are the platform's own premium plan or watching in a browser with a content blocker. Pi-hole covers everything else on the network.

❓ Common Questions (FAQ)

Can I add a special blocklist to stop YouTube ads?

No list can change how DNS works. YouTube ads and videos share domains, so blocking the domain breaks the videos. Lists advertised as YouTube blockers either do nothing or cause playback errors — the honest answer is that DNS blocking cannot separate them.

Why do some apps still show ads while websites look clean?

Websites typically load ads from separate third-party domains, which Pi-hole blocks. Many apps serve ads from the same domains as their own content, which cannot be blocked without breaking the app. Mixed results across apps are normal and expected.

Is a browser ad blocker better than Pi-hole?

They do different jobs. A browser extension sees the page content and can hide first-party elements and some in-stream ads, but it protects only that one browser. Pi-hole protects every device on the network at once, including TVs and apps, but only at the domain level. Many people run both.
