LAN Crimping Tools That Matter and Tools That Are Marketing
Cabling catalogues list hundreds of tools, and full kits look like great value - until half the case is soft metal and gadget filler. Five tools do nearly all the real work. Here is how to tell them apart from the marketing.

Good terminations come from a short list of tools used well. This guide separates the kit that earns its bag space - crimper, stripper, cutter, tester, punch-down - from the claims designed to sell you the other fifteen pieces.

Eight for eight is the goal of the kit, not the tester display - a ratcheting crimper, stripper, flush cutter, wire tester with remote, and a 110 punch-down tool cover nearly every LAN job.
1
Tools That Genuinely Matter
Ratcheting crimper matched to your plugs - the ratchet guarantees a complete crimp cycle every squeeze. If you use pass-through plugs, it must be the pass-through type with a trimming blade
Round cable stripper - adjustable or sized for UTP. It scores the jacket only, which prevents the nicked conductors that cheap stripping causes
Flush cutter - trims wires square for plugs and cuts pass-through tails cleanly
Two-piece wire tester - the remote unit is what makes wall-run and long-cable testing possible alone
110 punch-down tool - with a spring-loaded impact action and a cutting edge, for keystone jacks and patch panels. The free plastic tool in a jack box is a spare, not a tool
2
Tools That Help but Are Not Essential
A tone generator and probe - genuinely useful for identifying which cable in a bundle lands at which socket, once a site grows beyond a few runs
A better tester with length measurement and PoE checks - saves time on camera jobs and argues well with faulty runs
A label maker - boring, and it prevents more future faults than most instruments
3
Marketing You Can Safely Ignore
Certification claims from cheap testers - a wiremap tester checks continuity and order. True cable certification (crosstalk, return loss) needs instruments costing more than a car. Your link-speed test is the honest field check
Gold-plated everything as a speed feature - plating resists corrosion; it does not add bandwidth. Contact quality comes from the crimp, not the shine
Oversized combo kits - twenty tools where five are used and fifteen are soft metal. Buy the five core tools in decent quality instead
Laser measures and exotic strippers for jobs a tape and a round stripper finish faster
4
Buy Once, in This Order
Ratcheting crimper and matched plugs - the core of every job
Round stripper and flush cutter - cheap, and they remove the two biggest error sources
Two-piece tester - turns guessing into diagnosis
Punch-down tool the day you touch your first wall jack
Honest note: tool quality shows in the crimper die and the stripper blade - the two parts that touch the work. Spend there. A premium carry case, however, has never fixed a network.

A worn or non-ratcheting crimper can stop mid-crimp, leaving some contacts half-set - the exact cause of intermittent cables that pass today and fail next month. You do not need the most expensive model, but a ratcheting tool with a clean die is the one place not to save money.
Do I need a cable certifier for office work?
For installing and repairing office LANs, no. A wiremap tester plus a live gigabit link test answers the practical questions. Certification instruments exist for contract sign-off on large structured-cabling projects - a different job with different paperwork.
What is the first upgrade from a basic kit?
A tone generator and probe, if you maintain sites with many unlabelled runs. Finding one cable in a bundle by tones saves more time than any other accessory. Label as you go afterwards and you will need it less every year.
