The real installer is free - so why do so many websites still sell VMware keys and offer one-click downloads? Because the official route needs a Broadcom account, scammers bet you would rather skip the form. Their installers are where malware, miners and bundled junk come from. Here is how to never need them.
Search for this product and the first page mixes the real Broadcom portal with download portals, key shops and crack sites. Some are merely annoying; some wrap the genuine installer in an adware-laden downloader; some sell licence keys for a product that has needed no key since November 2024 - a key shop for Workstation Pro is a scam by definition today. The rule is simple: one official source exists, and it is support.broadcom.com.
Every legitimate Workstation Pro download starts at support.broadcom.com. You register a free account, complete the short profile and compliance step Broadcom shows new accounts, accept the download terms, and download the installer for your host. It takes a few minutes once - and the account also gives you the release notes, older builds and the knowledge base.
Broadcom's current release notes state plainly that Workstation Pro is free for commercial, educational and personal use and you no longer require a licence key. So a shop selling Workstation Pro keys in 2025 or later is selling you a string of characters that does nothing. The same goes for key-generator tools - at best useless, at worst the classic malware delivery trick aimed at people searching for cracks.
Third-party download sites often give you a small downloader program instead of the installer itself. That wrapper earns money by offering extra software during the download - browser toolbars, cleaners, crypto miners in the worst cases. Pre-activated or portable builds are worse: a modified hypervisor sits underneath every virtual machine you run, with complete access to your files and network. Never run VMs on a hypervisor you cannot trust.
Before running any installer, do the cheap checks:
support.broadcom.comDo not just install the real one over it. Uninstall the suspect copy, run a full scan with your antivirus, then reboot and install the official build from the portal. Move your virtual machines by copying their folders first - VMs are just files, and a genuine Workstation Pro will open VMs created by the same product line. Your data deserves a hypervisor whose origin you can prove.
Watch the official portal download in the video - account, terms, installer - so you can recognise the real pages on sight.
Watch Full VideoTreat it as unsafe. Broadcom distributes Workstation Pro through its support portal behind a free account, so a no-account direct link is a re-upload by someone else. It may be a clean copy today, but you cannot verify that - and the genuine route costs only a few minutes of registration.
Because people still search for keys out of habit from the paid era, and shops optimise for those searches. Since November 2024 the product needs no key at all - the honest answer to every key listing is that the key is unnecessary, and paying for one buys you nothing.
Download it from support.broadcom.com yourself, then check the file's Properties and Digital Signatures tab - a genuine installer is digitally signed by Broadcom. Also compare the file name and size against the portal download page for the release you picked.
