A professional tool that professionals paid for is suddenly free for everyone. That is not a trick and not a trial - it is a business decision by Broadcom, the company that bought VMware. This page tells the story straight: what changed, when, and the one real thing you give up.
For over two decades, Workstation Pro was a paid product - offices bought licences, and home users either paid or used the limited free Player. After Broadcom acquired VMware, that model ended in two steps during 2024. Understanding the change matters, because half the internet still gives paid-era advice: old pages will tell you to buy a key, enter a key, or avoid commercial use - all of that is out of date.
In May 2024 Broadcom made Workstation Pro free for personal use. Students, home labs and learners could use the full Pro product legally at no cost. At the same moment, the separate free Workstation Player was discontinued - it was no longer needed, because Pro itself had become the free product.
On 11 November 2024 the offer was expanded to commercial and educational users as well. From that date, Workstation Pro and its Mac sibling Fusion Pro are free products for every kind of use. Broadcom stopped selling the paid versions, and the software stopped asking for licence keys - a position Broadcom repeats in its current release notes.
The full Pro feature set at zero cost: snapshots, virtual networks, cloning, encrypted VMs, multiple VMs at once, and the same performance the paid product always had. A small office can now run Workstation Pro on work machines without a licence purchase - something that would previously have been a clear licence violation on the free Player.
Free is not free of consequences. Broadcom discontinued official technical support for Workstation Pro along with the paid model. Free users are not entitled to Broadcom's Global Support team - there are no support tickets and no paid contracts to buy. Help now comes from the product documentation, the knowledge base and the Broadcom community forums. For a lab tool this is usually fine; for a business-critical workstation it is a risk to accept with open eyes, and the support page in this series shows how to work well within it.
Ignore any guide that tells you to buy a Workstation Pro key - anyone selling one today is selling you something Broadcom gives away. If you still run an older 17.x install from the paid era, note that Broadcom's lifecycle listings show the 17.x line reaching the end of its service window in November 2025, so moving to the current 25H2 build is the sensible step. The free licence covers 17.5.2 and later, so even a late 17.x build needs no key - but current is better.

Watch Full VideoNeither. It is the complete Workstation Pro product with all features, offered free for commercial, educational and personal use. The change is in the business model - no licence sales and no paid support contracts - not in the software's feature set.
For current versions, yes in practical terms - new builds need no key, and nobody can buy the old licences any more. Your old install keeps working, but there is no refund path and the paid support model is gone, so the sensible move is to upgrade to the current free 25H2 build.
Yes. Since 11 November 2024 the free licence explicitly covers commercial use, and Broadcom's release notes confirm no licence key is required. What your company does not get is paid technical support - plan for community and documentation based help instead.
