Install day is the easy part. You will live with your choice through years of updates, questions at odd hours, and one roadmap you do not control. This page compares the two projects on exactly that long game: how they release, how big the helping crowd is, and who steers.

1

Release Rhythm - Fast River vs Steady Canal

Nextcloud now releases major versions by season - Hub 26 Winter, Spring and Summer are versions 33, 34 and 35 - with maintenance updates roughly monthly and three major versions supported at once. It is a fast river: new features arrive constantly, and in exchange you update often and occasionally watch a community app trail a release. ownCloud's Infinite Scale has moved at a steadier engineering pace to its current 8.0 line, with Classic receiving maintenance and security releases in parallel. Neither rhythm is wrong; match it to your temperament - the admin who loves new features and the admin who fears change are different people.

Community - Where Your Midnight Answer Lives

For a self-hoster, Nextcloud's community is simply the bigger room: the forums, the app ecosystem, the tutorial writers and the YouTube channels - including this one - overwhelmingly speak Nextcloud. Your exact error message has probably already been asked and answered there. ownCloud's community is smaller at the kitchen-table level, but do not mistake that for weakness: its centre of gravity is institutional - universities, research networks and public bodies running it at serious scale, with knowledge concentrated in enterprise and academic channels rather than hobbyist forums.

Governance and Trust - Read Both Honestly

  1. ownCloud's open wound, self-described: after the 2023 Kiteworks acquisition, the community feared closure and felt unheard; ownCloud's own blog admits the communication failure plainly.
  2. The repair is structural, not rhetorical: Kiteworks has stood up an Open Source Program Office for ownCloud, published a governance charter, harmonised licensing toward Apache 2.0, and retired the contributor licence agreement in favour of the Developer Certificate of Origin.
  3. Nextcloud's model: a company plus a very large contributing community under AGPL, with the 2016 fork itself as proof that the community will leave if governance stops deserving it.
  4. The practical test: both codebases are public and actively shipped in 2026. Trust the releases you can see, and keep your own exit - backups and standard formats - in good shape either way.

Common Questions (FAQ)

Which project will still be alive in five years?

Both have strong claims: Nextcloud with its huge community and customer base, ownCloud backed by Kiteworks and running national-scale education and research deployments. The honest answer is that both look durable - and open source code plus your own backups outlive companies anyway.

Which gets security fixes faster?

Both projects run responsible security programmes with regular maintenance releases - Nextcloud publishes monthly maintenance updates across its three supported majors, and ownCloud ships security fixes for both Infinite Scale and Classic. Your real risk is not their speed; it is running an old version because updating felt like a chore.

Can I buy support for either one?

Yes. Nextcloud sells enterprise subscriptions, and ownCloud's offerings sit inside the Kiteworks portfolio. Home users rarely need either; businesses that need a throat to choke can buy one on both sides.
