This is the comparison almost every self-hoster runs once, and the 2026 version has a twist: ownCloud is no longer one product. Alongside the classic PHP ownCloud there is now ownCloud Infinite Scale, a complete rewrite. So the real question is three-way - and the honest answer depends on whether you want a full collaboration suite in one box, or a focused file platform.
The three-way choice in one screen
Nextcloud Hubfiles plus chat, mail, calendar, office - one suite
ownCloud Classic (10)the familiar PHP file platform, still maintained
ownCloud Infinite Scalenew Go platform built for very large scale
Price of all threefree and open source to self-host

1
The Short Answer First
For most homes and small offices reading this: install Nextcloud. It gives you files, sharing, calendar, contacts, chat and office editing in one admin panel, with the largest community to copy answers from when something breaks. Choose ownCloud Infinite Scale when the job is files at serious scale - a school, a university, a public body, or a company that already runs separate mail and chat and wants a modern file engine underneath. ownCloud Classic is mainly the right answer if you already run it: it is still maintained, and nobody should rip out a working system for fashion.

What Each One Really Is in 2026
Nextcloud ships as the Hub - the current release is Hub 26 Summer (version 35, September 2026), with seasonal major releases and three major versions maintained at a time. It is PHP-based and licensed AGPL, and its identity is breadth: one login for files, Talk chat and calls, groupware, and office through Collabora or OnlyOffice. ownCloud today is two codebases under one brand: Classic (ownCloud 10), the LAMP-stack platform, still receiving maintenance and security releases on modern PHP; and Infinite Scale (oCIS), written in Go as microservices, running as a single binary with no separate database to tune, licensed Apache 2.0, and now on its 8.0 release line. Comparing Nextcloud only with Classic - or only with oCIS - answers the wrong question.

Where Nextcloud Pulls Ahead
Everything in one box: calendar, contacts, mail client, chat and video calls, notes, tasks and photos live beside the files, behind one login.
The app store: hundreds of community apps and integrations, so the odd extra you need probably already exists.
Community gravity: the self-hosting forums, tutorials and answered questions skew heavily Nextcloud - when your server breaks at midnight, this is the ecosystem you search.
Office included the easy way: a built-in Collabora option and a one-click OnlyOffice connector, the pairing this channel builds on.
4
Where ownCloud Pulls Ahead
Engineering for scale: oCIS was built with institutions like CERN and European school clouds in mind - federation between organisations, OpenID Connect login, and storage backends from local disk to S3.
Simplicity of moving parts: one Go binary, no PHP-FPM and database tuning ritual; the platform is deliberately focused on files, spaces and sharing.
Licence shape: oCIS under Apache 2.0 is the more permissive licence, which some organisations specifically prefer.
Standards-first federation: Open Cloud Mesh sharing between separate organisations is a first-class idea here, not an afterthought.
Honest note: there is no benchmark war to win here. Both platforms move files perfectly well on modest hardware. What you are really choosing is breadth versus focus - and whether the much bigger community matters more to you than the newer engine.
Watch the Complete Video Guide
The video installs and compares both side by side - this page is the honest map of which door fits which house.
No. ownCloud was acquired by Kiteworks at the end of 2023 and its code remained open source. The company has kept shipping - ownCloud Infinite Scale is on its 8.0 line and Classic still receives maintenance releases - and Kiteworks now runs a dedicated open source program office for the project.
Which one is easier for a complete beginner?
Nextcloud, for most people. Its all-in-one installers and huge tutorial base forgive more mistakes, and the features a beginner goes looking for - calendar, photos, office - are already inside instead of being a second project.
Is Nextcloud free for a business to use?
Yes. The community edition is AGPL open source and free to self-host for any use, including a business. Paid enterprise plans on both sides buy support, extra tooling and longer maintenance - they do not unlock the basic product.
