Unlock a BitLocker Data Drive from Windows with manage-bde
Windows boots fine, but your D drive or external drive shows a lock and refuses to open. Windows is already running — the unlock just has to happen from inside it, by prompt or by command.

A BitLocker data drive has its own separate recovery key — it is not the same one that unlocks your Windows drive. That single fact explains most failures here: people type the C drive key at the D drive prompt and get nowhere. Data drives also do not unlock with the TPM; they unlock with a password, a key file, or the 48 digit recovery password. Below are the three working routes, from the simple click to the manage-bde command that technicians use when the prompt misbehaves.
File Explorer — BitLocker Unlock Prompt for a Data Drive
Enter the 48-digit recovery key to unlock this drive
DriveData (E:) BitLocker Encrypted
Key ID shown in the promptMatches the data drive key

The standard unlock prompt. Note the Key ID in the prompt — it belongs to the data drive, not to your Windows drive.
1
First Find the Data Drive Recovery Key
Before unlocking anything, get the right key in hand. The prompt shows a Key ID for the data drive — match against that.
Open https://aka.ms/myrecoverykey and sign in
In the list, look for the entry with this drive's device and the Data Drive type, and compare the Key ID with the prompt
No match in the account? Check the printout or the USB text file created when this drive was encrypted
2
The Simple Route — Unlock from File Explorer
Double-click the locked drive in File Explorer
If it asks for a password you set earlier, try that first
Choose More options and then Enter recovery key
Type the 48 digit recovery key for this drive and click Unlock
3
The Technician Route — manage-bde Unlock ⭐
When the Explorer prompt is missing, greyed out, or the drive came from another PC, the command line does the same job directly. Replace E: with your drive letter and the sample digits with your real 48 digit key.
Open Command Prompt as administrator
Check the drive state first: manage-bde -status E: — Lock Status should read Locked
The reply confirms the password was accepted and the drive is unlocked — it now opens in File Explorer
The digits above are a format sample only. Your real key is the one matched to this drive's Key ID in Fix 1.
4
Stop Typing It Every Day — Turn On Auto Unlock
If this PC is your own and its Windows drive is encrypted, a data drive can unlock itself automatically at sign in.
Unlock the drive once using Fix 2 or Fix 3
Run: manage-bde -autounlock -enable E:
From the next restart, the drive opens on its own whenever you sign in
Change your mind later with manage-bde -autounlock -disable E:
🔴 Auto unlock has a condition: it only works while the Windows drive of this PC stays encrypted, and it ties the data drive's safety to your Windows sign in. On a shared or office PC, leave auto unlock off and keep typing the key — that is the protection doing its job.

Finding the recovery key and unlocking a real BitLocker locked drive — complete knowledge, step by step.
Why does the Windows drive key not unlock my data drive?
Each encrypted drive gets its own recovery key and its own Key ID. The C drive key can never open the D drive. Find the separate entry for the data drive in your Microsoft account or backup file.
The unlock command says the password is not correct. What should I check?
Three things — the drive letter (run manage-bde -status on the letter you are unlocking), the Key ID match, and plain typing: 48 digits, 8 groups of 6, no spaces. One wrong group fails the whole key.
Can I unlock the drive on a different PC?
Yes. Connect the drive to any Windows PC with BitLocker support, and unlock it with the same recovery key through Explorer or manage-bde. The key belongs to the drive, not to the original computer.
