Router Firmware Update Guide Do It Safely Without Bricking
Firmware is the router's own software. Updating it is genuinely worth doing - and the one job where a small mistake has a big price. Here is the careful way.

Router firmware updates patch real security vulnerabilities - home routers are attacked constantly, and old firmware is the open door. Yet people avoid updating because they have heard of bricked routers. The honest truth: bricking almost always traces to one of three mistakes - the wrong file, updating over WiFi, or power loss mid-update. All three are easy to avoid. Follow this order and the update is boring, which is exactly what you want.
Router Label vs Firmware File - the Version Check That Matters
Model on Router LabelExample: Archer C6
Hardware Version on LabelV3.0
Firmware File DownloadedMust match model AND V3
A V2 File on a V3 RouterWill fail or brick
Same model name, different hardware versions, different firmware files. The version printed on the physical label decides.
1
Before Anything - Back Up and Note the Essentials
In the router's System or Maintenance section, find Backup and save the settings file to your PC
Also note by hand: your WAN type and PPPoE username/password, WiFi names and passwords - if the update resets the router, paper notes save the day
Write down the current firmware version from the status page, so you can confirm the change afterwards
2
Get the Exact File from the Official Site Only
Read the model and hardware version from the sticker on the router itself - V1, V2, V3 of the same model use different files
Download firmware only from the manufacturer's official support page for that exact model and version
Never install firmware from a forum link, a file-sharing site, or a file meant for another region's version of the model
Unzip the download if needed - routers usually want the .bin file inside
3
Update Over a Cable, With Power Protected
Connect the PC to the router with a LAN cable. Never update over WiFi - if the radio restarts mid-transfer, the file arrives incomplete
Make sure power is stable; if you have a UPS/inverter, this is its moment. Do not update during a thunderstorm or known power cuts
Upload the file in the Firmware Upgrade section and wait. The router will go dark and reboot - this takes several minutes. Do not unplug, refresh, or press anything until the lights settle and the login page returns
4
After the Update - Verify, Do Not Assume
Log in and check the status page: the firmware version should be the new one
Most updates keep your settings. If the router came up reset to defaults, restore your backup file from the same System section, or re-enter the WAN and WiFi settings from your notes
Test internet on a cable device and a WiFi device, and check one fixed device like the printer
If the new firmware misbehaves badly, most brands allow reinstalling the previous version the same way - another reason to keep the old file and the backup
🔴 If an update does go wrong: a router that no longer boots is often recoverable - most brands have a recovery method (holding reset while powering on, then uploading firmware to a fixed address like 192.168.0.1 from a PC with a static IP). Check the official recovery page for your model before declaring it dead or buying a new one.

Check every three to six months, or immediately when the manufacturer announces a security fix for your model. If your router offers automatic updates, turning them on is reasonable for most homes - the update still happens on the manufacturer's schedule with their tested file.
The update page says the file is incorrect, but I downloaded it from the official site. Why?
Almost always a hardware version or region mismatch - for example a V2 file offered to a V3 router, or firmware for the same model sold in another country. Re-read the physical label, match the version exactly, and download again. The router refusing the file is the safety system working.
Will updating firmware reset my WiFi name and settings?
Usually not - settings carry over. But major version jumps sometimes reset the router, which is why the backup and the handwritten notes in Fix 1 are not optional. Treat every update as if it might reset, and it can never surprise you.
