Router Internet Light Red WAN Not Connecting PPPoE and DHCP Fix

WiFi is connected, the router page opens, but there is no internet and the globe light burns red. The fault sits in exactly one place: the WAN side. Here is how to corner it without guessing.

A red internet light means the router and the ISP are not agreeing with each other. In practice it is one of four things: the WAN type is wrong, the PPPoE login is wrong, the ISP line itself is down, or the ISP has locked the connection to the old device's MAC address. Work through them in this order and you will find it - changing WiFi settings, which many people do first, cannot help because WiFi is not the broken part.

Router Admin - WAN Status (Not Connected Example)
Connection TypePPPoE
WAN IP Address0.0.0.0
StatusDisconnected
Failure ReasonAuthentication failed / No response

A WAN IP of 0.0.0.0 means the router never completed its login with the ISP. The failure reason line tells you which fix below applies.

1

First Prove Whether the ISP Line Itself Is Alive

  1. Look at the ISP device (ONT or modem): its PON/LOS lights matter - a red LOS light means a fibre or line fault at the provider side
  2. Connect a PC directly to the ISP device with a cable and test
  3. If the direct connection also has no internet, stop here - the fault is the ISP's, and no router setting will fix it. Raise a complaint and keep the direct-test result ready to tell them
2

Match the WAN Type to Your Connection

  1. Dynamic IP (DHCP) connections need no credentials. If your type is set to PPPoE on such a line, the router waits forever for a login the ISP never asks for
  2. PPPoE connections need the exact username and password from the ISP. One wrong character gives Authentication failed and a red light that looks identical to a line fault
  3. Re-type the PPPoE password slowly, watch for capital letters and symbols, and remove any extra spaces pasted at the end
  4. Save, then power-cycle in order: ISP device off and on, wait, then the router
3

The Hidden Cause - MAC Address Binding and the Clone Fix

Some ISPs register the MAC address of the first device that connected - usually their own router or your old one. A new router with a different MAC is then simply ignored, even with perfect settings.

  1. In the WAN or Internet settings, find MAC Clone or MAC Address
  2. Choose Clone PC MAC if your PC was the device that worked directly, or type the old router's MAC, printed on its sticker
  3. Save and reboot both devices

Honest note: not every ISP binds MAC addresses, and fibre ONTs authenticate differently. Try this after the WAN type and password are confirmed correct, not before.

4

VLAN and Other Fibre Special Cases

A few fibre ISPs need a VLAN ID on the WAN (common values are given by the ISP or visible in the old router's settings). If the old router shows a VLAN ID under its internet settings, copy it exactly into the new one. MTU is another rare one: PPPoE normally uses 1492; if pages half-load rather than fully fail, that is the setting to check - a total red light is almost never MTU.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

The internet light is green but websites still do not open. Is it the same problem?

No - green light means the WAN connected. If browsing still fails, suspect DNS. Set DNS manually to 1.1.1.1 and 8.8.8.8 in the WAN or DHCP settings and test again. Half-loading pages point at MTU; nothing loading at all points at DNS or a device-side issue.

How long should I wait after changing WAN settings?

Give the router one to two minutes to negotiate after each change, and power-cycle the ISP device once if the status stays stuck on Connecting. PPPoE logins occasionally lock for a few minutes after several failed attempts, so avoid hammering reconnect thirty times in a row.

My ISP says the line is fine but the light is still red. What now?

Connect the ISP's own router or a PC directly, as in Fix 1, and check again while on the call. If the direct test works and your router does not, compare the old device's WAN page setting by setting - type, VLAN, MAC. One of those three differs. If the direct test also fails, the line is not fine, whatever the support script says.
