WiFi Slow in Other Rooms Fix Channels Placement and Interference

Your internet plan is probably fine. What dies between the router and the far room is the WiFi signal itself - and it usually dies for fixable reasons.

The speed test beside the router shows the full plan speed, but two rooms away videos buffer and calls freeze. Before blaming the ISP, understand the three real causes: the router is badly placed, its channel is crowded by neighbours, and the device has drifted onto the wrong band. Work through placement first - it costs nothing and fixes more than any setting. Then channels. Only after both should you spend money on extra hardware.

WiFi Analyser Style View - 2.4 GHz Channels in a Flat (Example)
Channel Usage - 2.4 GHz
Channel 16 networks
Channel 61 network
Channel 114 networks

In this example your network belongs on channel 6 - the quietest of the only three channels that do not overlap each other.

Placement - the Free Fix That Beats All Settings

  1. Central beats corner. A router in the corner of the house throws half its signal outside. Move it towards the centre, even by a few metres
  2. High beats low. On top of a cupboard beats inside one. Never inside a metal cabinet, behind a TV, or next to an aquarium
  3. Walls are the real enemy. Brick and concrete, especially bathroom tiles and mirrors, absorb signal. Two solid walls between router and room is roughly where 5 GHz dies and even 2.4 GHz struggles
  4. Keep it away from the microwave oven and cordless phone base - they share the 2.4 GHz band and jam it while running
2

Pick a Free Channel - 1, 6 or 11 Only

On 2.4 GHz, channels overlap each other; only 1, 6 and 11 do not overlap at all. Routers set to channel 3 or 8 fight with everyone.

  1. Install a free WiFi analyser app on your phone and look at which of 1, 6 and 11 is least crowded in the room where speed is bad - networks vary by room
  2. In the router's wireless settings, set the 2.4 GHz channel manually to that one instead of Auto
  3. Set channel width to 20 MHz in crowded flats - the wider 40 MHz mode grabs two channels and suffers more interference than it gains
  4. On 5 GHz, leave it on Auto; there are many more channels and far less crowding
3

Understand the Bands - Range vs Speed Honesty

5 GHz is faster but its signal fades through walls roughly twice as fast as 2.4 GHz. A far-room device clinging to a one-bar 5 GHz signal will often run slower than it would on a strong 2.4 GHz signal. If your router uses one shared name, it should steer automatically - cheaper routers steer badly. Splitting the names and deliberately putting far, fixed devices on the 2.4 GHz name is an honest, reliable workaround, not a step backwards.

When Settings Are Not Enough - Extend Properly

  1. Best: run a cable to the far area and add an access point - full speed, no compromise
  2. Good: a mesh system with two or three units, designed to hand devices between nodes
  3. Weakest: a cheap plug-in repeater - it typically halves the speed it repeats and creates a second network name. Acceptable for a guest room, disappointing as a whole-house answer

And one honesty check: if the wired speed beside the router is also far below your plan, the problem is the ISP line or the plan itself - no placement trick fixes that.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Will a more expensive router with more antennas fix my far room?

Slightly, at the margins - better radios squeeze a little more range. But antenna count does not change physics: concrete walls absorb what they absorb. One mid-range router plus one wired access point almost always beats one very expensive router in a home with several solid walls.

My neighbour's WiFi is stronger than mine in my own bedroom. What can I do?

You cannot remove their signal, but you can avoid it: choose the least crowded of channels 1, 6 and 11, use 20 MHz width on 2.4 GHz, and prefer the 5 GHz band close to the router where neighbours are fewer. If your router and theirs both sit on channel 6 at full width, one of you moving fixes both networks.

Does restarting the router actually improve speed?

Sometimes, briefly - a restart makes an Auto-channel router re-scan and pick a quieter channel, and clears stuck states. If speed only improves after restarts and degrades again within days, the router is ageing or overheating; check its ventilation before replacing it.
