Tally Data Version Mismatch Error When Restoring on Another PC
The backup is fine, Tally is fine - but the restore refuses. Nine times out of ten the two PCs are simply running different Tally releases, and data only moves in one direction. Here is the rule, the diagnosis, and the only fix that actually works.

This failure wastes more phone calls than any other in Tally data transfers, because both sides see the same product name - TallyPrime - and assume the versions match. They often do not. Tally data follows a strict forward-only rule, and once you understand it, the error becomes the easiest one in this whole series to fix.
The version rule, in one line
Backup taken on : TallyPrime Release 5.x --X--> Restore on Release 4.x NOT SUPPORTED
Backup taken on : TallyPrime Release 4.x ---> Restore on Release 5.x WORKS (data migrates up)
Tally data moves forward only. There is no downgrade.
This is not a bug to work around. It is how Tally's data migration is designed.
1
Why the Restore Refuses
Every Tally release can change the internal format of company data - new fields, new structures, new indexes. When a newer release opens older data, it migrates it forward, and that works. An older release opening newer data would have to do the opposite, and Tally simply does not support it. So a backup made on a colleague's up-to-date PC can refuse to restore on a client's PC that has not been updated in two years - even though both are "TallyPrime". The same applies across the bigger jump: ERP 9 data restores and migrates into TallyPrime, but a TallyPrime backup does not go back into ERP 9.
2
Check Both Versions Before Blaming the File
On the sending PC, open Tally and note the exact release shown on the Gateway / help screen
On the receiving PC, do the same
If the receiving release is older, you have found the problem - the .tbk file is almost certainly fine
Do not rename, split, or "repair" the backup file with random tools - version mismatch is not corruption
3
The Correct Fix - Update the Receiving PC
Download and install the same or a newer Tally release on the client PC, from the official Tally Solutions website
Open Tally once and let any licence and configuration prompts complete
Run the Restore again with the original .tbk file
Accept the migration if Tally offers it, then verify the company (Trial Balance and Day Book) as usual
Updating Tally on the client PC is a few minutes of work and changes nothing about their existing companies - their older data migrates forward the first time each company is opened.
4
Prevent It Next Time
Before sending any backup, agree the versions as part of the handover: the sender states the release the backup was taken on, and the receiver confirms theirs matches or is newer. Offices that exchange data regularly should simply stay on the same current release everywhere - it removes this entire class of failure, and several others.
Never try to beat a version mismatch by copying the data folder instead. The folder carries the same new-format data - the older Tally still cannot read it, and now you have untracked file copies as well.

Why does Tally refuse to restore a backup from a newer release?
Each Tally release can change the internal data format. Newer releases migrate older data forward, but older releases cannot read newer data at all. Updating Tally on the receiving PC to the same or a newer release is the supported fix.
Can TallyPrime data go back to Tally.ERP 9?
No. ERP 9 data can be migrated into TallyPrime, but the move is one-way. A TallyPrime backup cannot be restored into ERP 9.
Is the .tbk file corrupt if restore fails with a version error?
Almost certainly not. A version refusal means the file is fine but the receiving Tally is too old. Re-copy the original file after updating Tally and restore again.
