Subdomain vs Domain What Is Actually Free and What Is Not

People hear “free subdomain” and expect a free website address from nothing. Here is the plain accounting: what you pay for once, what stays free forever, and what nobody — including Cloudflare — gives away with this method.

A domain is the name you buy and own: example.com. A subdomain is an extra word in front of it: blog.example.com, shop.example.com, mail.example.com. The confusion starts because both look like "website addresses" — but only one of them is a product you purchase. The domain is the plot of land. Subdomains are just room names inside the house you already built — naming a new room is free, buying a new plot is not. Every “free subdomain” guide, including the video on this channel, stands on that one fact.

Who Owns What — the money map
You pay the registrar -> example.com (the domain, renewed yearly) You create for free -> blog.example.com (subdomain) You create for free -> shop.example.com (subdomain) You create for free -> nas.example.com (subdomain) Cloudflare charges -> Rs 0 for the DNS records above
👆 One paid line at the top. Everything under your own domain is a free DNS record

What You Actually Pay For

Exactly one thing: the domain registration, renewed every year. Prices depend on the ending (.com, .in, .net and so on) and the registrar. In the video, the domain is bought at a registrar like GoDaddy and only the management (DNS) is moved to Cloudflare. Moving DNS to Cloudflare is free and does not move your registration or its yearly bill — your registrar keeps charging the renewal, Cloudflare never charges for answering DNS on the free plan.

Also note: Cloudflare has its own registrar that sells domains at wholesale cost with no markup. “At cost” is still a cost — it is cheaper, not free.

What Is Genuinely Free

  1. Unlimited subdomain names in practice — each is one DNS record; the free plan gives a generous record quota for a zone (200 records for free zones created after 1 September 2024, and 1,000 for older free zones, per Cloudflare's documentation) — far more than any beginner will use
  2. Cloudflare DNS hosting — fast, reliable answering of your records on the free plan
  3. Proxy features for web subdomains — caching, basic DDoS protection and the Universal SSL certificate covering your root and first-level subdomains
  4. Changing your mind — edit or delete a subdomain record any time, free, in seconds
3

What Is NOT Free — No Matter What a Title Promises

  1. A domain itself. No method on Cloudflare creates yourname.com for free. Anyone promising that is selling something else
  2. The server the subdomain points to. Hosting, a VPS, or your own home server and electricity — DNS is only the signpost, not the building
  3. Deep subdomain certificates on the free plan. Universal SSL covers blog.example.com but not app.blog.example.com; that deeper coverage is a paid feature
  4. Someone else's domain. You can only create subdomains under domains in your own account. Free-subdomain services on other people's domains exist elsewhere on the internet, but that is a different, riskier thing — the owner can delete your address at any time

So Is the Video Title Honest?

Yes, with the one condition this page exists to explain: if you own a domain, subdomains on Cloudflare are completely free — no catch, no per-name fee, no trial. If you own nothing yet, your total starting cost is one domain for one year, and after that every experiment — blog, test site, dashboard, NAS name — rides free on top of it. That is exactly why professionals buy one good domain and build everything under it, the way Google runs drive, maps and mail under one purchase.

🔴 Never pay anyone for a “subdomain” under your own domain. If a person or site offers to sell you shop.yourdomain.com when the domain is already yours, they are selling you a 30-second free step from this guide.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get a free subdomain without owning any domain?

Not with this method. Subdomains only exist under a domain someone owns. Services that offer free subdomains under their domain exist, but the address is never truly yours and can be removed by the owner at any time.

Does Cloudflare charge after a trial period for DNS?

No. Cloudflare's free plan is a permanent free plan, not a trial. DNS hosting, subdomain records, the proxy and Universal SSL described here stay free; paid plans add advanced features most small sites never need.

How many subdomains can I create on the free plan?

Practically, each subdomain is one DNS record and free zones allow 200 records (zones created after 1 September 2024) or 1,000 records (older free zones). A normal site uses fewer than twenty — the limit is not something a beginner will touch.
