Block a Game from Internet but Keep Windows Update Working
You want the game offline — no forced game updates, no online lobbies eating study time — but Windows security updates must keep flowing. Good news: they are completely separate systems. Blocking the game cannot touch Windows Update, as long as you block the right files.

The fear is understandable: block the wrong thing and the PC stops updating. But a program rule names one file — the game's .exe — while Windows Update runs through Windows services hosted by the system. They never meet. This guide shows what to block for a typical game, and the one popular mistake that really does break updates.
Services — Who Actually Downloads What
Game.exe / Launcher.exeBLOCK THESE
Windows Update service — inside svchost.exeLEAVE ALONE
BITS and Delivery Optimization — inside svchost.exeLEAVE ALONE
Game files and Windows Update travel through different programs — a rule on the game cannot reach the services.
1
Why Windows Update Is Safe from a Game Rule
Windows Update downloads are carried by services — Windows Update (wuauserv), BITS and Delivery Optimization — and all of them run inside the shared system host svchost.exe. A firewall program rule for Game.exe applies to that file only. It has no path to the services, so patches, driver updates and security fixes continue exactly as before.
2
Block the Game — and Its Launcher
Create the standard outbound block rule for the game's main .exe (see the main guide in this series)
Most PC games start through a launcher — Steam, Epic or the game's own. If you also want the game's own updates stopped, block the launcher's .exe too — but understand that this blocks updates and downloads for every game in that launcher, not just this one
If only multiplayer should stop while the launcher keeps updating the game, block just the game .exe and leave the launcher alone
Some games have a separate anti-cheat or helper .exe in the game folder — block them too if the game still slips online, using the find-the-real-file method from this series
3
Prove Windows Update Still Works
Open Settings → Windows Update and click Check for updates
It should scan and report normally — you are up to date, or updates download as usual
Then start the game: its online modes, login and update check should fail while offline play works
Both results together mean the fence is exactly where you wanted it.

The svchost Mistake That Breaks Updates
Forums sometimes suggest blocking svchost.exe to stop a game or to "stop Windows telemetry". Do not. Svchost hosts dozens of services — Update, BITS, time sync, network discovery and more. Blocking it stops security updates, breaks downloads in other apps and causes errors nobody connects back to the rule. If you ever created such a rule, delete it: wf.msc → Outbound Rules → find any block rule whose program is C:\Windows\System32\svchost.exe → Delete.
One honest exception to this whole guide: Xbox and Microsoft Store games are packaged apps stored in the protected WindowsApps folder, which makes picking their .exe awkward. The method here fits standard games — Steam, Epic and direct installs — which is nearly every PC game people ask about.
🔴 Rule of thumb: block files that belong to the game; never block files that belong to Windows. If a path starts with C:\Windows, stop and think twice.

The game's updates arrive through its launcher or the game itself, so blocking both executables stops game updates as well. Windows security updates are a different system and keep working.
My child plays through the Xbox app. Can I block that game?
Xbox PC games are Microsoft Store packages inside a protected folder, so the simple path-pick method often fails there. For Steam and Epic games the method works directly. For an Xbox title, time limits in the Xbox Family Settings are usually the practical tool.
The game still connects after I blocked the exe. Why?
The game likely has a helper or anti-cheat process doing the talking, or it runs through the launcher. Find which file is actually connected while the game is online and block that file as well.
