Chrome Downloads Panel Opening Files Automatically The Always Open Trap

The PDF downloads - then opens itself before you touch it. That is not the PDF setting; it is an always-open tick you gave once and forgot. Here is where it hides and how to take it back.

Different complaint, same family: you download a PDF - good - and then it springs open by itself in a viewer before you even click it. Or you fixed the main PDF setting weeks ago and files from the downloads panel still launch on their own. The culprit is a separate, older Chrome habit: the "always open" choice attached to downloaded files. One tick, given once and forgotten, keeps firing. This page finds that tick and removes it.

One careless tick on the downloads panel teaches Chrome to auto-open that file type forever - until you untick it.
1

Understand What the Tick Actually Does

When a file finishes downloading, its entry in Chrome's downloads panel has a small menu. One option reads like "Always open with system viewer" (older Chrome said "Always open files of this type"). Ticking it tells Chrome: every future file of this type, open it yourself the moment it lands.

2

Remove the Always-Open Behaviour

  1. Download any small PDF (or find an existing PDF entry) and press Ctrl + J to open the Downloads page
  2. Open the menu on the PDF entry and look for the "always open" option
  3. If it is ticked, untick it - from now on downloaded PDFs wait quietly in the folder like other files
  4. Download one more PDF and confirm nothing opens by itself

If your Chrome build does not show the untick on the entry, the setting page route in the next section covers the neighbouring behaviour - where downloads land and whether Chrome asks each time.

The Neighbour Settings on the Downloads Page

While you are here, open chrome://settings/downloads and review the two options that shape the whole download experience.

Keep the Good Half - Open It Yourself, In One Click

Removing auto-open does not make opening harder; it just returns the decision to you.

Safety note worth one line: auto-opening downloaded files is exactly the habit malware hopes for. A malicious file renamed to look harmless gets one free launch from that tick. Downloads that wait for your click are the safer default for every file type, not just PDFs.

Common Questions (FAQ)

Why do downloaded PDFs open automatically even after I set Download PDFs?

A separate per-file-type choice is responsible: Always open with system viewer, ticked once on a downloads panel entry. It tells Chrome to launch every future file of that type the moment it downloads, independent of the PDF documents setting.

How do I stop files opening automatically after download?

Press Ctrl + J, open the menu on a PDF entry in the Downloads list, and untick the always open option. Then download one more PDF and confirm it stays closed until you click it.

Is it risky to leave always-open switched on?

It removes your one chance to look at a file before it launches, which is exactly what malicious downloads rely on. For work files it is also simply annoying. Leaving files closed until you click them is the safer and calmer default.
