Chrome PDF Documents Setting Download PDFs Instead of Opening Them

The setting exists, but it hides two levels deep and changed its wording between versions. Here it is exactly - both wordings, both routes, and the quick test that proves it worked.

Most fix guides say "turn off the PDF viewer in settings" and stop there - then you open Settings, search "PDF", find nothing, and give up. The setting is real, but it hides two levels deep inside Site settings, and its name has changed shape between Chrome versions. This page is only about that one control: exactly where it sits, exactly what it is called, and how to prove the change actually took.

On older ChromeOne switch - Download PDFs instead of...
Two doors, one room - the direct address and the menu path both open the same PDF documents page.
1

The Address That Goes Straight There

Skip the menus entirely. Chrome settings pages have their own addresses, and this one is short.

  1. Click the address bar (or press Ctrl + L)
  2. Type chrome://settings/content/pdfDocuments and press Enter
  3. You land directly on the PDF documents page - no hunting through Settings

Typing the address also avoids a common trap: Chrome's Settings search box. Searching "PDF" there sometimes shows nothing useful, while the direct address always works.

2

The Two Choices - And Which One You Actually Want

The page offers a simple pair of radio buttons under Default behaviour.

Select Download PDFs. There is no OK or Save button anywhere on the page - Chrome stores the choice the instant you click it, and you can close the tab straight away.

3

Older Chrome? Look for the Switch Wording Instead

On older Chrome versions the same page shows a single toggle switch instead of two radio buttons, labelled "Download PDFs instead of automatically opening them in Chrome".

  1. If you see the switch, turn it on - on means download, not open
  2. If you see the two radio buttons, select Download PDFs
  3. Both are the same underlying setting - Google simply redrew the page

Screenshots in older articles show the switch; screenshots in newer ones show the radios. If your screen matches neither, update Chrome once and check again - very old builds buried this page in a different place.

4

Prove It Worked - The 20-Second Test

  1. Open any ordinary PDF link - a sample invoice, a manual, any document link on a normal website
  2. Watch the downloads icon at the top right of Chrome - the file should appear there as a download, and no PDF tab should open
  3. Find the file in your Downloads folder and double-click it - it should open in your PDF reader, not a browser

If step 2 passes but step 3 opens a browser, the Chrome half is fixed and the remaining half is the Windows default app for .pdf files - a different setting, covered in its own page in this series.

Honest edge case: a handful of websites generate PDFs inside a viewer of their own - a bill preview inside the bank's page, for example. That is the website's own player, not Chrome's, and no Chrome setting changes it. The giveaway: the address bar still shows the bank's page, not a .pdf file address.

Common Questions (FAQ)

What is the exact address of Chrome's PDF setting page?

chrome://settings/content/pdfDocuments - type it in the address bar and press Enter. By menus it is Settings, then Privacy and security, then Site settings, then Additional content settings, then PDF documents.

My page shows a switch, not two options. Is it the same setting?

Yes. Older Chrome versions show a switch labelled Download PDFs instead of automatically opening them in Chrome - turn it on. Newer versions show two radio buttons - select Download PDFs. Both control the same behaviour.

Do I need to restart Chrome after changing it?

No. The choice is saved the moment you select it and applies to the next PDF you click. If an already-open tab behaves the old way, refresh that tab or click the PDF link again.

This guide is based on the Technical Anshu video on stopping Chrome from opening PDFs automatically - stuck on any step, ask in the video comments and you will get an answer.
