Open Downloaded PDFs in Your Real PDF Reader by Default on Windows
Downloading is only half the fix. If Windows hands every .pdf file to a browser, the problem returns through the side door. Pair the file type with your real reader and it stays fixed.
Watch the video - the Chrome setting plus the Windows default that completes the job
You fixed the Chrome setting, PDFs now download properly - and then you double-click one and it opens in a browser anyway. Nothing is broken. You fixed the browser half of a two-part problem. The second half belongs to Windows: the default app for .pdf files. On many PCs that default quietly points at Edge or Chrome, so every downloaded PDF walks straight back into a browser tab. This page sets it to your real PDF reader, permanently.
Windows Settings - Default apps
Search file type.pdf
Before - browser as defaultWRONG APP
After - your PDF readerRIGHT APP
PathSettings > Apps > Default apps
Chrome decides download or display - Windows decides which app a downloaded PDF opens in. This is the Windows half.
1
Set the Default App for .pdf Files
Open Windows Settings and go to Apps, then Default apps
In the search box at the top - the one for file types - type .pdf
The current default app is shown next to it; click it
Choose your PDF reader - Adobe Acrobat Reader, Foxit PDF Reader, SumatraPDF or the reader you actually use - and confirm
Double-click any PDF on your disk to verify it opens in that app
No reader installed? Install one first from its official website, then come back - Windows can only offer apps that exist on the PC.
2
The Right-Click Route - Open With, Then Always
Same result through the file itself - useful when Settings feels slow.
Find any PDF file, right-click it, and choose Open with
Pick Choose another app
Select your reader and tick Always use this app to open .pdf files
Click OK - that tick is what makes the choice permanent instead of one-time
Without the "Always" tick, Windows opens this one file in the reader and learns nothing - the next PDF goes back to the old default.
3
Why the Default Keeps Pointing at a Browser
Three usual reasons, none of them a conspiracy.
Windows ships that way. On a fresh Windows install with no PDF reader present, Edge is the .pdf default - simply because it can open them.
A reader was never chosen. Installing a reader does not always make it the default; some installers ask, some quietly do not.
Big updates can reset it. Occasionally a Windows feature update or a new browser install re-points the default. If PDFs suddenly open in a browser again months later, re-check this page first.
4
From Inside Chrome - Open a Downloaded PDF in the System Viewer
One smaller trick for files already downloaded through Chrome.
Press Ctrl + J to open Chrome's Downloads page
Next to a downloaded PDF, use its menu and choose Always open with system viewer if offered
Future PDFs of that kind, clicked from the downloads list, open in the Windows default app instead of Chrome's viewer
Treat this as a convenience, not the foundation. The foundation is the Windows default itself - set that once and every route (Explorer, email attachments, downloads list) behaves the same way.
Honest limit: this pairing controls files on your disk. A PDF link inside Chrome is governed by Chrome's own PDF setting first - if links still open in a tab before ever downloading, that browser setting is the one to fix; this page handles everything after the download.
Watch the Complete Video Guide
The video shows the browser side - this page adds the Windows default-app half so downloaded PDFs open in your reader.
Why do downloaded PDFs open in Edge or Chrome when I double-click them?
Because the Windows default app for the .pdf file type is set to that browser. Chrome's download setting cannot change it. Set the default in Settings, then Apps, then Default apps, by searching for .pdf and choosing your PDF reader.
I installed Adobe Reader but PDFs still open in the browser. What missed?
Installing a reader does not always make it the default. Use Open with, then Choose another app, and tick Always use this app to open .pdf files - or set it directly on the Default apps page.
Will a Windows update reset my PDF default?
It can happen occasionally after a big feature update or a new browser install. It is not common, but if PDFs suddenly open in a browser again one day, this default app setting is the first place to check.
