PDF Behaviour in Mobile Chrome Edge and Firefox What Changes on Each
One fix per browser, one per device - nothing syncs. Android Chrome, iPhone Chrome, Edge and Firefox each keep a PDF habit of their own; here is each one, honestly, in a minute apiece.
Watch the video - the Chrome desktop setting, then use this page for your phone and other browsers
The desktop fix takes a minute - and then your phone opens PDFs its own way, and the office laptop running Edge ignores everything you learned. That is because PDF behaviour belongs to each browser on each device; nothing syncs it. This page is the honest map: what Chrome on Android and iPhone does by design, and the equivalent switch in Edge and Firefox, so the same one-minute fix exists everywhere you actually open PDFs.

One fix does not travel - each browser and each phone platform keeps its own PDF habit. This panel is the map.
1
Chrome on Android - It Downloads by Design
Mobile Chrome never had the desktop's in-tab PDF viewer habit in the same way. On Android, tapping a PDF link downloads the file, and it then opens in whatever PDF app Android offers - Google Drive's viewer, Adobe's app, or your file manager's choice.
There is no Download PDFs toggle to set - downloading is simply the built-in behaviour
To change which app opens the file, change Android's default: open the PDF, choose your app, and pick Always when Android asks
If PDFs open in an app you dislike, clear that app's defaults in Android Settings, then Apps, then that app, then "Open by default"
So on Android the complaint is usually reversed - people want a preview. A lightweight viewer app set as the default gives the closest thing to one.
2
Chrome on iPhone - iOS Holds the Reins
On iPhone and iPad, Chrome shows PDFs inside its own view with a share and save sheet rather than a desktop-style download setting.
Use the share button to send the PDF to Files, Books, Adobe Acrobat or your office app - that is the designed route off the browser
Saving to Files makes the document behave like a real file everywhere else on the device
There is no equivalent of the desktop PDF documents page on iOS Chrome - do not waste time hunting for it in settings
3
Microsoft Edge - The Same Idea, Its Own Address
Edge has its own capable PDF viewer and, neatly, the same style of control.
Type edge://settings/content/pdfDocuments in Edge's address bar and press Enter
Turn on Always download PDF files
Through menus it is Settings, then Cookies and site permissions, then PDF documents
Reverse it on the same page if you prefer Edge's viewer - it is genuinely one of the better built-in readers
4
Firefox - Choose the Action in the Applications List
Firefox handles this through its content-type table rather than a PDF page.
Open about:preferences and stay on the General panel
Scroll to Applications and find Portable Document Format (PDF) in the list
Set its Action to Save File for download-first behaviour, Open in Firefox for the built-in viewer, or Use Adobe Acrobat (or your reader) to hand PDFs straight to your app
The same table governs other file types, so one visit can calm Firefox's whole download behaviour
Honest summary: the idea is identical everywhere - tell the browser whether a PDF is a page to view or a file to save - but no setting syncs between browsers or devices. Budget one minute per browser you actually use, and the whole house behaves the same.
Watch the Complete Video Guide
The video fixes Chrome on the desktop - this page covers the same job on Android, iPhone, Edge and Firefox.
No. The PDF documents setting is stored per browser and per device. Chrome on Android downloads PDFs by design and has no such toggle, and on iPhone the PDF is handled through the iOS share and save flow instead.
Where is the equivalent setting in Microsoft Edge?
Open edge://settings/content/pdfDocuments and turn on Always download PDF files. Through the menus it is Settings, then Cookies and site permissions, then PDF documents.
How do I stop Firefox opening PDFs in its viewer?
Open about:preferences, scroll to Applications, find Portable Document Format (PDF), and change its Action to Save File, or to your desktop PDF app if you want files handed straight to it.
This guide is based on the Technical Anshu video on stopping Chrome from opening PDFs automatically - stuck on any step, ask in the video comments and you will get an answer.
