Your own Jira on a Windows machine, installed the way the video shows it — installer, wizard, first login. Read the first section before you download anything: the edition reality matters.

🎥 The complete Jira installation on Windows — every screen, step by step
A self-hosted Jira is still the best way to learn how Jira really works and a daily reality for teams maintaining existing installs. This guide follows the video install exactly, and adds the one thing every installer screen will not tell you — where this edition stands today.

Read This First — Jira Server Support Has Ended
Honesty before steps. Atlassian ended support for Jira Server on 15 February 2024. No new Server licences are sold, and Server installs no longer receive security patches or bug fixes. Existing Server licences are perpetual — an install you already own keeps running legally, just unsupported.
So who should follow this guide? Teams running a lab or training setup, admins maintaining an existing licensed install, and anyone learning how Jira works before moving to Jira Cloud or Jira Data Center (the self-managed edition Atlassian sells now). Do not build a brand-new production system on an unpatched edition and expose it to the internet. The install below is exactly what the video shows — what you do with it should respect that reality.
2
Download the Windows Installer
Download the 64-bit Windows installer (.exe) for Jira Software from Atlassian. Existing customers get older Server releases from their Atlassian account downloads; the current self-managed downloads are Data Center builds, and the install flow is the same.
You do not need to install Java or Tomcat separately — the installer bundles both.
Keep your licence key ready, or plan to generate a time-limited evaluation licence during setup.
3
Run the Installer — Folders, Port and Service
Run the .exe as administrator and choose the Custom install so you can see every choice.
Installation directory: where the program files go. The suggested default is C:\Program Files\Atlassian\Jira.
Home directory: where Jira stores attachments, logs, indexes and configuration. The suggested default is C:\Program Files\Atlassian\Application Data\Jira. If you have a second drive, putting the home directory there is a sensible choice — it will grow.
Ports: keep the default HTTP port 8080 unless something else on this machine already uses it.
Select Run Jira as a service. This makes Jira start automatically with Windows — without it, Jira only runs while you start it manually.
Finish the installer and let it launch Jira.
4
Finish in the Browser — the Setup Wizard
Open http://localhost:8080 in a browser on the server. The first load can take a few minutes while Jira builds its database tables — a slow first start is normal, not a failure.
Choose how you will set it up. The quick route uses the built-in database — fine for evaluation, not for production (a separate guide on this site explains why).
Enter your licence key, or generate an evaluation licence.
Create the administrator account. Use a strong password and note the username — this account is your rescue key later.
Set the base URL and, optionally, mail server details. Mail can be configured later, so do not stall the install on it.
5
First Login and the Sanity Check
Log in with the administrator account you just created.
Create one sample project and one test issue. If you can create, assign and close it, the install is healthy.
Open Administration → System info once and confirm Jira sees the memory and database you expect.
That is the whole install: installer, wizard, first issue. Everything after this — external database, firewall access for your team, SSL, backups — is hardening, and each topic has its own guide linked from this series.
🔴 Jira installed but the page never opens? Check three things before reinstalling: the Atlassian Jira Windows service is actually running, nothing else is holding port 8080 (run netstat -ano | findstr :8080), and the log file atlassian-jira.log inside the home directory's log folder — it records the real error. A full will-not-start diagnosis deserves its own deep guide; these three checks catch most dead installs.

The full installation, screen by screen, is in the video — this page is your written companion for every step and warning.
No. Jira has always been commercial software. You can generate a time-limited evaluation licence during setup, and existing Server licences are perpetual — but there is no free Server edition. Small teams usually find Jira Cloud cheaper than running any server.
Why does the first page load take so long?
On first start Jira creates its database tables, indexes and caches. A wait of a few minutes on modest hardware is normal. If it never finishes, read the atlassian-jira.log file in the home directory log folder — it names the failing step.
Can I install Jira on my normal office PC?
For learning and evaluation, yes — a regular Windows 10 or 11 PC works. For a team in production, use a dedicated Windows Server machine that stays on, with an external database and proper backups.
