Many admins installed Jira Server from a tutorial, ran it happily, and only later heard the words end of support. This guide separates rumour from fact: your licence, your data and your options, in plain order.

What End of Support Actually Means Day to Day
End of support is not a switch that turns your Jira off. Your install keeps working — people log in, issues move, reports run. What stops is everything behind the product:
No security patches. If a serious vulnerability is found in Jira Server tomorrow, Atlassian will not fix the Server edition. On an internal lab network that risk may be acceptable; on the open internet it is not.
No bug fixes and no new versions. From 9.13 onwards, new Jira releases exist only for Data Center customers.
No support tickets. Atlassian support will not take Server cases. Community forums become your only official-ish help.
Marketplace apps age out too. App vendors follow Atlassian — Server versions of plugins stop being maintained.

Your Three Real Options
Keep running Server, knowingly. Acceptable for a lab, for training, or for an internal instance with existing data that you are actively planning to move. Keep it off the public internet and back it up properly.
Move to Jira Cloud. Atlassian's main road. No server to patch at all, per-user pricing, and migration assistants exist for Server data. For most small and mid-size teams this is the honest recommendation today.
Move to Jira Data Center. The self-managed subscription edition — same family, clustering and enterprise features. Know its horizon too: Atlassian has announced Data Center end of life, with products becoming read-only in March 2029. It buys years, not forever.

The Mistake to Avoid
The genuinely bad move is the accidental one: installing Jira Server fresh in 2026 for a new production team because a tutorial showed it, then discovering the patch situation a year later with real project data inside. If you are starting new, start on Cloud. If you are learning, install Server freely — just label it a lab in your own head and in your documentation.

Will my Jira Server stop working after end of support?
No. Server licences are perpetual, so an existing install keeps running and your team can keep using it. What ends is Atlassian support, security patches, bug fixes and new Server versions.
Is it safe to keep running Jira Server?
On a closed internal network with good backups, many teams accept the risk for a lab or a system being migrated. Exposed to the internet, an unpatched Jira is a real security risk — do not do that.
What should a new team choose instead?
For most teams, Jira Cloud — no server maintenance at all. If you must self-host, Jira Data Center is the supported edition today, but note Atlassian has announced its end of life too, with read-only mode from March 2029.
