What Self-Hosting Really Buys You
Control. Your data sits on your hardware, in your building, under your rules. Regulated offices and defence-adjacent work sometimes have no choice — and that is a legitimate reason, not a preference.
Network reality. A LAN Jira is fast and works when the internet does not. For a factory or a site office with poor connectivity, that matters daily.
Customisation depth. Self-managed editions historically allowed deeper server-side customisation and integrations inside your own network.

What Self-Hosting Really Costs You
Your time, forever. Patching Windows, patching Jira, renewals, backups, restore tests, certificate renewals, database care. Small teams rarely count this cost until the one admin goes on leave.
The edition clock. Server is already unsupported. Data Center is supported today but Atlassian has announced its end of life — read-only from March 2029. Any self-hosted plan is now a plan with a migration inside it.
Security responsibility. An internet-facing, self-patched application server is an attack target. Cloud moves that entire burden to Atlassian.

New team, no special rules? Start on Jira Cloud. Spend your energy on projects, not servers.
Must keep data in-house? Data Center is the supported self-managed route — budget the subscription and diarise its 2029 horizon today, not in 2028.

One More Question — Who Owns It in Three Years
Servers outlive enthusiasm. Before self-hosting, name the person who will patch Jira next year and the person who covers their leave. If the honest answer is "nobody knows", that is your answer: choose Cloud, where ownership is a subscription renewal and an admin password, not a machine in a cupboard that one ex-employee understood. Document whichever you choose — instance URL, admin accounts, backup location — in one page your successor can find.

We already run Jira Server. Must we migrate right now?
Not this week — Server licences are perpetual and your install keeps working. But it receives no security patches, so keep it off the public internet, back it up properly, and start planning the move to Cloud or Data Center rather than letting the decision arrive as an emergency.
Is Jira Data Center a permanent safe choice?
It is the supported self-managed edition today, but Atlassian has announced Data Center end of life, with products becoming read-only in March 2029. It is a solid medium-term home, not a permanent one.
What tips most small teams to Cloud?
Maintenance. Cloud removes patching, upgrades, backups and server security from your plate entirely. Once a team honestly prices the admin hours self-hosting consumes, Cloud usually wins for groups without a compliance reason to self-host.
