Reset a Forgotten Windows Password From WinPE Your Own PC Only
Locked out of your own PC is a fixable problem - for local accounts. Here is how the offline reset works, the honest checks before it, and the three situations where no tool can help and patience is the answer.

A forgotten password feels like the end of the world and is usually twenty minutes of work - with two honest conditions. First, the technique on this page is for your own PC, or one you are authorised to unlock. Second, it only works on local accounts: a large share of lockouts today are Microsoft accounts, and those have a completely different, simpler door. Checking which kind you have is step one.
Offline account check - what this PC actually uses
Accounts found in the offline Windows:
Anshu - Local account, Administrator <- resettable offline
Guest - disabled
Microsoft account sign-in (email based) <- NOT stored on
this PC - cannot
be reset from here
BitLocker on C: - ON <- without the
recovery key, this
page never opens
Before any password tool runs, this is the check that matters: local accounts can be reset offline, Microsoft accounts cannot, and BitLocker decides whether you get in at all.
1
The Ethics Line, First and Without Fine Print
An offline password reset edits the account database of a Windows that is not running, so it asks for no old password. That is precisely what makes it a lifesaver on your own PC - and precisely why it must only ever be used on a PC you own, or one whose owner has asked you, in person, to get them back in. The rules in this guide assume that. Using the same technique on a machine that is not yours is not a repair skill; it is breaking in, and no framing in a tutorial changes that.
With that settled: this is one of the most requested jobs on any repair bench, because a forgotten local password on a home PC is common and completely recoverable.
2
What the Reset Button Actually Does
The offline Windows stores local accounts in a protected database file (the SAM). Password tools in a WinPE toolkit open that database while Windows is asleep and blank or change the password of a chosen local account.
Blanking is usually the safer choice: set it empty, sign in, then immediately set a proper new password from inside Windows, the normal way.
The same tools can also enable a disabled built-in Administrator account - a legitimate last-resort door on your own machine when no other admin account can sign in.
Everything happens to the offline copy of the database; a careful tool writes a backup first. Use one that does, and note what you changed in the job log.

The Three Walls No Reset Button Can Climb
Microsoft accounts. Most Windows 10/11 PCs sign in with a Microsoft account, whose password lives with Microsoft, not on the PC. Nothing on the disk can reset it. The route is the normal one: reset it online from another device, and the PC accepts the new password the next time it connects to the internet.
BitLocker. If the drive is encrypted, you cannot even read the account database without the 48-digit recovery key. That is the encryption doing its job - the same wall that stops a thief stops you.
EFS-encrypted files. If the user encrypted individual files with Windows EFS, a forced password reset makes those files permanently unreadable - their keys were protected by the old password. On any PC where this is even a possibility, warn the owner before resetting, and prefer every other route first.
4
Do the Job Like a Professional
Confirm ownership - the person asking should be able to show the PC is theirs (it is their home machine, their name is on the account photo, whatever fits the situation).
Check the account type before reaching for the tool. Half of "forgotten password" jobs turn out to be Microsoft accounts that need an online reset and five minutes of patience.
Reset, sign in, set a fresh password together with the owner, and help them store it somewhere safe this time - a password manager, or at minimum a written note kept at home. Also make sure a recovery option exists: a second admin account or a password reset disk for local accounts.
Record the job in the repair log: "local account password reset at owner's request", with the date. On someone else's property, paperwork is protection for both sides.
🔴 The uncomfortable truth worth knowing: this technique existing is exactly why a PC password alone was never real security. The actual protection for data on a modern PC is BitLocker encryption - with it on, a stolen laptop gives up nothing; without it, anyone holding the machine and a repair stick can walk in. If this job teaches the owner one thing, it should be that.

My PC signs in with an email address. Will this reset work?
No - that is a Microsoft account, and its password is verified by Microsoft’s servers, not stored in a form the PC can edit offline. Use the "I forgot my password" route on the Microsoft account website from a phone or another PC, set a new password, then sign in on the locked PC while it is connected to the internet. It accepts the new password once it can check in.
Will resetting the password delete the files in the account?
Normal documents, photos and desktop files are untouched - the reset changes the sign-in secret, not the data. The one real exception is files the user encrypted with EFS (the per-file Windows encryption): those are keyed to the old password and become unreadable after a forced reset. It is uncommon on home PCs, but it is why a professional asks about encrypted files before resetting.
The drive has BitLocker and the key is lost too. Is there any way in?
Honestly, no. BitLocker without its recovery key has no back door - not for repair tools, not for Microsoft support, not for anyone. This is by design; it is what makes a stolen encrypted laptop worthless to a thief. If the key is truly gone, the path forward is a clean Windows install on a wiped drive, and the data lesson gets learned the expensive way.
